Your Free Guide to a SAFER Job Search 1

Who are SAFERjobs? SAFERjobs was set up in partnership with the Metropolitan Police in 2008 as part of Operation Sterling SAFERjobs is a not-for-profit Community Interest Company SAFERjobs is a partnership with Department for Business, Energy, Industrial Strategy & Skills (BEIS), Trading Standards, DWP, law enforcement, recruiters, job boards, and trade associations SAFERjobs is supported by GOV UK Who are SAFERjobs? SAFERjobs was set up in partnership with the Metropolitan Police in 2008 as part of Operation Sterling, it was a slow start in the beginning putting competitors around the table, now we have grown to become a key part of the recruiter sector. SAFERjobs is entirely voluntary and not-for-profit Community Interest Company SAFERjobs is a partnership involving the Department for Business, Energy, Industrial Strategy, and Skills (BEIS), Department for Work & Pensions (DWP), law enforcement, and industry recruiters, job boards, and trade association. Appeared on BBC News, Radio, BBC Fake Britain, and BBC Rip Off Britain 2015 saw an increase in fraud reports as a result of website visits – 2016 has seen a big rise in fraud reports and financial amounts reported SAFERjobs have achieved GOV UK status: www.gov.uk/jobsearch The Metropolitan Police are reaching out to more recruiters www.safer-jobs.com 2

The SAFERjobs Story Monthly website traffic has grown from 700 in 2013 to 50,000 in 2017 SAFERjobs now receives 5 reports a day How has a voluntary joint law enforcement and industry organisation achieved this? www.safer-jobs.com 3

The SAFERjobs Story Utilised public sector support: Law enforcement set up SAFERjobs The regulator, BEIS joined in 2013 to support SAFERjobs Government (DWP) joined in 2015 Utilised private sector initiative: Developing a website was essential, this was built in 2013 Promoting the website then started in earnest In 2015 Universal Jobmatch promoted SAFERjobs on their home page In 2016 NHS Jobs added SAFERjobs in every job advert Now we have 45 job boards and 35 recruiters promoting us to candidates including Prospects.ac.uk The total monthly traffic of companies who now promote SAFERjobs is 107.15m www.safer-jobs.com 4

The SAFERjobs Story Now Government has taken notice… Employment Minister Damian Hinds MP has commented in two recent media stories Lord Lucas has joined as Patron and is actively generating contacts and opportunities Ben Howlett MP became our Parliamentary Patron but lost his seat recently so situation vacant… We are working on our first Amendment, a job fraud Amendment to next year’s Digital Bill www.safer-jobs.com 5

What are our Aims? To protect all job seekers and to improve standards in recruitment To achieve this, we want: All job boards, careers services, and recruiters to promote awareness of SAFERjobs All organisations using job boards and recruiters to ensure their suppliers work with SAFERjobs Every job seeker to know they can get free help and advice Every user to report misconduct in recruitment to SAFERjobs www.safer-jobs.com 6

What are Job Scams? www.safer-jobs.com Need a job? Fancy a change? Perhaps you have just been head-hunted? 1 in 3 of us will seek a new job in 2016 and 67% start our job search online Is your profile already on social media, a CV on a job site, has the perfect employer finally made that call….what could possibly go wrong? Job scams are used to affect people actively looking for work through job boards, recruitment companies, or through their own search. However, with the rise of social media networking sites job fraud now affects people who are not even looking for jobs! www.safer-jobs.com 7 7

SAFERjobs released a joint press release in 2015 with Action Fraud and Get Safe Online. Statistics showed the most affected group were the 18 – 25 age range, however SAFERjobs receives reports from job seekers of all ages. The press release highlighted the average job scam costs an individual £4,000. London, Manchester, and the West Midlands saw the most fraud activity. SAFERjobs get reports of job scams ranging from £50 for a fake police check to £20,000 for visas, insurance, and other employment services. We are in an age of millennials, who are more text savvy and expect to do their job search on line, therefore it is a key sector for Safer jobs to work with this year. 67% of job seekers look online but 72% are unaware of scam signs www.safer-jobs.com 8

Types of Job Scams DBS and Visa Scams Work Abroad Scams Au Pair Scams CV Writing Scams ID Theft Hotel scams Premium Rate Phone Scams Money Laundering Work at Home Scams 9 Most Common Job Scams: DBS and Visa Scams Fake Contractor Scams Au Pair Scams CV Writing Scams ID Theft Hotel Scams Premium Rate Phone Scams Money Laundering Work at Home Scams In 2014, the Daily Telegraph reported job scams with fraud scams being 1 of the top 10 scams in the UK. The Metropolitan Police have seen this grow in 2015, as one of their key focus areas, with fraudsters manipulating the scam each time to meet the job seekers criteria of “wants”. In 2015 we saw fraudsters take over £1m through a job scam where they cloned a well-known retail store employment site. Many of you will know and may have been affected by the Fake Contractor Scam, many months can pass before the scam is identified, many of which can be prevented were prevented. The Fake Contractor scam works through a fraudster pretending to work on behalf of a large multinational requesting staff for an overseas office meeting a particular job spec. Within hours a contractor turns up who meets that spec. The contractor starts on a healthy day rate and the agency pays weekly. Many months can pass before the agency realises the two people were in the scam together and have walked off with £30k. Advice from SAFERjobs have prevented 3 recruitment companies falling victim of this scam. www.safer-jobs.com 9

In the last few months, we have appeared in the Daily mirror, the home page of the DBS and a crimestoppers article. What does SAFERjobs Do? “The last thing job seekers want is to fall victim to a scam, so it’s vital that people do all they can to stay safe while looking for work online. There are plenty of genuine opportunities in the labour market right now — around 740,000 vacancies in the economy at any one time — so it’s important that people learn to recognise the tell-tale signs of a fake job advert, and if you have any concerns visit the SAFERjobs website to find out more.” Damian Hinds MP, Employment Minister, September 2016 www.safer-jobs.com 15 15
