Build your resume/CV Earn course credit (if you are still in school) Get letters of reference Table 4 - Volunteering - John Hello my name is John Abresch –I’m Assistant Librarian at the University South Florida Library –along with my colleague Rachel Cooke University Librarian at the Florida Gulf Coast University Library we would like to discuss volunteering and professional organizations and libraries. Interacting with Professional Organizations are a great way to gain knowledge of the library profession, and to keep on top of current news affecting libraries. Library professional associations provide career opportunities for librarians, opportunities to meet and share experiences and learn from each other. Practical up-to-date information about libraries and issues affecting libraries are shared at association conferences and in association publications, listservs and websites. Association committees, interest groups, discussion groups and round tables further provide informal settings for information sharing. Professional organizations provide networking opportunities, allowing individuals to connect with their peers, mentors, and other industry leaders. As a member, you are in position to attend conventions, seminars, award dinners and other related events with like-minded professionals in the field. Volunteering at a library or joining a Professional Organization can help build your resume/CV, get you that first job, and help you move forward in your career. Public, Academic and Special libraries value the experience and teamwork skills that you gain in these activities. If you are still in library school you may even be able to earn course credit by interning or volunteering at a public or academic library.
