EVASIVE MANEUVERS TASK: 2008 Perform Evasive Maneuvers CONDITION: In an observation helicopter in a simulated tactical environment with a tactical map or orally in a classroom environment. REFERENCES: TC1-215, FM 1-112 FM 1-203

STANDARDS Pilot on the controls: Pilot not on the controls: Use the correct evasive maneuver consistent with the type of hostile fire encountered. Pilot not on the controls: Properly assist P* when performing evasive maneuvers. Correctly perform crew coordination actions.

DESCRIPTION When engaged by enemy fire or upon receipt of a signal indicated acquisition by enemy radar. P* will move to cover and perform evasive maneuvers.

Fighters Mask A/C if possible If alone – turn the helicopter toward the attacker and descend Turn sharply and maneuver away once the attacker is committed

Tanks And Small Arms Immediately turn away from the fire and mask A/C if possible Sharp turns of unequal magnitude and at unequal intervals with small changes in altitude If the situation permits, employ immediate suppression

Heat-Seeking Missiles Turn the tail of the helicopter away from the missile Mask

Helicopters Use the appropriate air combat maneuvers to break contact with or evade

Large Caliber Antiaircraft Fire (Radar Guided) Immediate 90 degree turn to move away from the burst Don’t maintain a straight line of flight or the same altitude for more than ten seconds before initiating a second 90 degree turn Immediate descent to contour or NOE altitude will reduce the danger

Antitank Guided Missiles Mask Orient on the missile as it approaches Just prior to impact, rapidly change altitude to evade it

Artillery Depart the area Determine NBC requirements

What steps should be taken if hit by hostile fire? Assess aircraft controllability Check all instruments Initiate the appropriate emergency procedure When continued flight is possible, take evasive actions Report situation, location, POB, and what action you are taking Fly to nearest secure location, land, and inspect A/C
