More and more workers are realizing the benefits of being able to vary their posture between sitting and standing. Whether it helps them feel better or helps them be more confident and productive, many users really like to stand and work! Though the benefits far outweigh the challenges, the 3M Workspace Solutions team is uncovering several needs unique to standing workstations that will create additional opportunities for new product solutions going forward! Queries for standing workstation have grown at 48% CAGR since 2011 when findings from the following: Pronk NP, Katz AS, Lowry M, Payfer JR. Reducing Occupational Sitting Time and Improving Worker Health: The Take-a-Stand Project, 2011. Prev Chronic Dis 2012;9:110323. In total there were over 300,000 searches in the month of October 2016 for standing workstations and related terms. The top search term is “standing desk”. There are two primary types of standing workstations: height adjustable tables/desks which replace a traditional desk and a retrofit standing workstation which converts existing fixed height desks or tables into a standing workstation. Height Adjustable Tables/Desks: •Plus: has a large work surface all at one level that raises and lowers either with a crank or electric. This gives the user the most room for tools and work area in front of them. In addition, the user is able to optimize both the sitting and standing height of the work surface (some products have memory). •Minus: these products are generally higher cost than retrofit products and the user/company would need to move the existing furniture. New construction or renovations of office space will often incorporate these products for standing work stations. Retrofit Standing Workstation: •Plus: converts an existing fixed height work surface such as a desk or table into a standing workstation at typically a lower cost. •Minus: These products have less overall work surface so it can be difficult to get all tools within arms reach with less room to work. Also, because they attach to the desk or sit on top of the desk it can be more difficult to get the keyboard to the optimized height in the seated position. Within retrofit standing workstations there are also two main types: attach to the desk or freestanding on top of the desk. The “attach to the desk” type has been around longer and the unit sales leader, the “freestanding” type is growing much faster and has recently taken over the unit sales lead. Attaches to Desk: •Plus: these models generally have more overall adjustability and are easy to move between sitting and standing. They also can be lowered below the desk height surface for a more optimal position for sitting for some users. •Minus: These units need to be assembled and attached to the desk. There are many desk and furniture configurations so it can take time to find a place to attach to the desk. Also, each component (keyboard tray, work surface platform, monitor arm) needs to be adjusted and set. The keyboard surface is often bouncy. Freestanding (desktop): •Plus: Sits on top of desk so it doesn’t need to be installed. Some like the 3M™ Precision Standing Desk are pre-assembled and are ready to use right out of the box. They have a stable work surface and are generally lower cost than those that attach to the desk. •Minus: Lower down to the desk height which can be too high for some users in the seated position.
