Proof of Concept: Contextualizing the Data Dr. Carmella Fair, Instructional Resource Consultant Dr. Nancy Carolan, Section Chief Testing Policy and Operations October 15, 2015 and October 29, 2015
Desired Outcomes What role do interim/through-grade assessments play in a Balanced Assessment System? How are interim/through-grade assessments different from formative assessment? What data will teachers have following each interim/through-grade assessment? How can this data be used to inform instruction and supports for students?
What is formative assessment What is formative assessment? Formative assessment is a process used by teachers and students during instruction that provides feedback to adjust ongoing teaching and learning to improve students’ achievement of intended instructional outcomes. CCSSO FAST SCASS – 2006
What are interim assessments? Tests administered periodically throughout the school year Tests aligned with state standards (in NC) Interim assessment data provide information to identify students who may need intervention prior to additional assessments Interim assessment data may inform future instructional planning and decision-making *In the through-grade model, the interim assessments align with items students encounter on EOG tests.
Formative assessment and interim assessments are part of a balanced assessment system can be used to influence classroom level decisions about instruction
Proof of Concept Through-Grade Model Model consists of three interim assessments and a summative assessment given at the end of the year Interim 1: October 1−31 Interim 2: December 8, 2015─January 22, 2016 Interim 3: March 3−31, 2015 Will provide student level assessment data available more often Data can inform and guide decisions about future instruction Data may be used to predict performance on future assessments within the year

Analyze and interpret interim assessment data What went well/what needs work (content and instruction) Observe patterns Formulate inferences/verify inferences Draw conclusions which may lead to changes in assessment or instruction
Use interim assessment data Identify students who may need intervention prior to additional assessments Data can be used to focus future instruction based on student needs High-quality corrective instruction Enrichment activities Plan opportunities for students to show a new level of understanding during instruction

Contextualizing the Data Math Different standards assessed each time Consider to what extent instruction for each assessed standard has taken place prior to the assessment Use to inform planning and supports for students ELA/Reading Same standards assessed each time Text increases in complexity Consider in what ways instruction has integrated the standards that are being assessed Use to inform planning and supports for students

Wrap Up Interim assessments provide one snapshot Use multiple pieces of data to plan interventions for students (e.g., classwork, student responses, other assessments, homework, and projects) Proof of concept resources: https://center.ncsu.edu/ncaccount (NC Education) Formative assessment resources: http://formativeassessment.ncdpi.wikispaces.net (wiki) https://center.ncsu.edu/ncfalcon/ (NC FALCON)
