Background Within TEMPUS SHESPSS were developed Standards & Competencies in Social Work Education Practice Learning Standards in Social Work Education TEMPUS SHESPSS supported development and realization of trainings for mentors Faculty of Political Sciences, University of Belgrade, employed teacher of practical skills (part time job) Authors are experienced in active learning approach

Development of two trainings for mentors Two trainings were developed by prof. dr Jasna Hrnčić and prof. dr Nevenka Žegarac Basic one day training for mentors Advanced two day training for mentors

Basic training for mentors Aims: Introducing in skills of implementation of Practice Learning Standards in Social Work Education Introducing skills of completing learning aims and assignments of mentors Understanding the process of preparation and realization of students’ learning plan

Basic training for mentors - teaching blocks/1 Included four teaching blocks: 1. Presentation and discussion on Standards & Competencies in Social Work EducationPractice and Practice Learning Standards in Social Work Education 2. Development of competencies for practice learning in Social Work Education What competences should be developed and what is the best approach in teaching them: work in small groups, presentation, discussion, educative resume Implementation of practice learning standards by different actors in realization of practice learning: work in small groups, discussion

Aims of learning in practice learning and assignments for mentors Experiences of participants in mentorship: group discussion, educative resume First day of filed education / first meeting with the trainees: role play, educative resume 4. Learning plan of the trainee and evaluation during practice learning Methods of transferring knowledge: group discussion, educative resume Phases in preparation of the learning plan: educative resume Elements of the learning plan: small group work, educative resume Elements of practice learning evaluation: educative resume Evaluation of the training

Advanced training for mentors/1 Requirement: completed basic training for mentors General aim: development of skills of optimal management of students and others trainees on practice learning in line with Practice Learning Standards in Social Work Education

Advanced training for mentors/2 Specific aims: Development of skills of introducing to a trainee the organization where the field education taking place Development of skills of preparing and realization of trainee’s practice learning plan Development of skills of effective and reflective communication with a trainee Training in implementation of filed visits Encouraging implementation of ethical principles during practice learning Development of skills of practice learning evaluation

Advanced training for mentors – first day – teaching blocks/1 Included four teaching blocks: 1. Orientation of the trainee in the organization Values, vision and mission of the organization: group discussion, educative resume Organogram: educative introduction, small group work in preparing organogram, presentation, educative resume 2. Giving and taking feedback Principles of giving and taking feedback: educative introduction, exercise in pairs, group discussion

Advanced training for mentors – first day – teaching blocks/2 3. Reframing skills Educative introduction, exercise in pairs, group discussion 4. Training skills in filed visit. Ethical practice Field visit: group discussion, educative introduction: phases in field visit, simulation/role play, group discussion Ethical practice: small group analysis of Codex of Professional Ethics in Social Protection; Examples of ethical issues: small group exercise, group discussion, educative resume

Advanced training for mentors – second day Four teaching blocks: 1. and 2. block: skills of preparing practice learning plan with a trainee Educative introduction, small group work, role play, group discussion, educative resume 3. Management of mentor meetings Educative introduction, role paly, group discussion, educative resume 4. Trainee’s place in the workplace, evaluation Trainee’s place in the workplace: simulation, group discussion, educative resume Methods and elements of practice learning evaluation: small group discussion, educative resume Training evaluation and closing

Piloting the programmes Piloted in October 2016 Basic training:16 participants from 10 organizations on Advanced training:119 participants from 13 organizations Both trainings were registered in the Chamber for Social Protection

Evalutaion Both trainings were evaluated by questionnaire Nine dimensions of training process graded on scale from 1 to 5 (1- the lowest, 5 – the highest grade) Four open questions for comments on quality of the training Results: Basic training had average grade between 4.68 and 5.00 and very positive comments Advanced training was evaluated even better, with average grade from 4.87 -5.00 and highly positive comments

Plans Accreditation of the programes in National Institute for Social Protection Including both trainings in the regular teaching practice at the Faculty of Political Sciences
