Engineering The current focus on engineering at Ulster University is fuelled by: The Royal Academy of Engineering reports that 1.25 million science, engineering, and technology professionals are needed by 2020 in the UK alone; Aerospace and Defence alone contribute £1bn to the NI economy; and The sector is so diverse that it needs graduates from a range of traditional disciplines such as electrical and electronic engineering, mechanical and manufacturing engineering, mechatronic engineering as well specialisms including Biomedical Engineering, Clean Technology, Renewable Energy Engineering, Engineering Science.

Computing The focus on computing within the Ulster University is fuelled by: Computing is a huge driver of the UK economy, and employment in the sector is projected over the next five years to grow at almost five times the UK average; NI Growth sectors include ICT/Electronics – subsectors include: mobile telecoms, cloud computing, financial software, digital media, information management and health informatics; and NI is the leading foreign investment region in Europe in software development and IT technical support with over 100 international investors.

Courses have been developed with direct input from employers to ensure that what our students need is responsive to industry needs. Ulster offers a suite of professionally accredited, industry relevant career focused courses – perfectly placed to meet the rising demand for qualified professionals.

Inspiring Our staff aims to inspire our students Staff at Ulster have the reputation of providing a high level of support to students. This is evidenced by the recent reaccreditation of computing courses by the panel chair of the BCS: “The staff are so committed to their students’ success and make every effort to make themselves available to students”. KIS stats for MEng Mechanical Engineering 90% of students agree that staff are good at explaining things with 95% of graduates from this course in professional/ managerial jobs within 6 months of graduating.

Engaging with industry The Faculty enjoys strong links with industry through joint research programmes, consultancy, fusion projects and Knowledge Transfer Partnerships and Industry Liaison Panels. Successful spin-out and spin-in companies include: Heartscape, Heartsine, Intelesens, HidInImage, Axis Composites and Si-Saf. These strong industry links inform our teaching and our students’ learning experience.

REF results 2014 – speak for themselves   ENGINEERING 100% of our engineering research impact is considered world or internationally leading and we are in the top UK quartile across all research topics. Engineering is in the top 20 within UK universities. 79% of our research is rated at 4 star or 3 star (world-leading or internationally excellent - leading in terms of originality, significance and rigour) which puts us in the top quartile within the UK across all units of assessment. Advanced Materials research is in the top 12 within UK universities.

Computing and Engineering Engineering competencies Engineering and manufacturing strategy is core to FDI with over 70,000 employed in the sector. Also many of our industrial origins in engineering include ship-building to advanced electronics and a large number of global innovations were created in NI.
