Agenda Industry Challenge & Response Company & Technology Solutions & Products

The Challenge - 1 Freshwater is under clear and imminent threat ! Water quality problems persist, and increase, due to natural events, as well as man-made activities. Long term trends, as well as tragic unforeseen events, effect water quality in both developing and developed countries: Growing population, urbanization, industrialization, agricultural demand, infrastructure deterioration, climate changes. Earth quakes, storms & floods, tsunami, industrial accidents, even intentional dumps as well as war and terror !

The Challenge - 2 Millions of people around the world are effected by poor drinking water quality, many get sick and even die as a result. Water pollution has health as well as non health impact on society – both are translated to tremendous costs. A 2007 report from the world bank titled “China – Environmental Cost of Pollution” demonstrated that: Combined costs of environmental pollution in China is ~ 100 Billion US$, or about 5.8% of GDP. Water pollution is causing growing levels of cancer in children – what cost is that to society's hearts ?

The Need Human waste, industrial wastes & chemicals, agricultural pesticides and fertilizers are in many cases sources of pollution. Many rivers, lakes and ground water sources are becoming or could become increasingly contaminated. Some contamination event are abrupt – happening without any warning. New pollutants, as well as synergies between pollutants , are not easily detected and pose a new threat. Current water quality monitoring does not provide protection to public health – it is too narrow and takes too much time to be effective.  There is a need for a paradigm change !

Industry Response Water quality monitoring equipment is an important, evolving & growing segment within the water / environmental technology industry. The industry is adopting new monitoring technologies to enable broader, more sensitive and quicker detection of pollutants. Increased sampling as well adoption of new continuous ‘on-line’ monitoring are becoming industry ‘de-facto standard’. A new “Early Warning” segment is evolving in order to provide a time-relevant protection against contamination disasters.

Target Markets Primary target applications / markets: Raw & drinking water quality monitoring & early warning. Emergency, routine (field, lab, on-line). Water utilities, water authorities. Environmental & health protection agencies. Security agencies.

Target Markets Secondary target markets: Wastewater, desalination, industrial & process water. Desalination plants, beverages companies, industrial companies, treatment plants. Efficiency and quality control improvement.

Our Company Vendor of water quality monitoring technologies & products. Headquarters are in Israel. Operates internationally. Private company, founded in 2001 by Dr. Nirit Ulitzur - a biology expert. Equity investment by Whitewater in 2008 – an Israeli investment group focusing on water technologies. Israel’s Chief Scientist Office supports CheckLight’s R&D. Scientific research is headed by Prof. (Emeritus) Shimon Ulitzur (Technion Institute), a leading scientist in the field of microbial luminescence.

Mission & Vision Mission – enable global water utilities & related organizations to protect and ensure drinking water safety & quality by developing, manufacturing and delivering innovative early warning solutions which detect a wide range of contaminants quickly, efficiently and cost-effectively. Vision – bioluminescence-based monitoring will become a global industry standard to be adopted by environment protecting organizations around the globe.

Management Team CEO – Mr. Eyal Mor (BA), 20 years experience in leading high-tech companies into global markets. CTO & Founder – Dr. Nirit Ulitzur (PhD., Stanford PostDoc), an expert on water quality testing based on bacterial luminescence. Chief Scientist – Prof. (Emeritus) Shimon Ulitzur, worldwide reputation (>30 years of research, >70 publications) in microbial luminescence. VP BD & Marketing – Mr. Moti Blau (MCIM, MBA), over 18 years of international business development, marketing & sales. VP Operations – Mr. Nir Hertzman (MBA, Elct. Eng.), over 15 years of operations management in various industries.

Core Technology - 1 Non-pathogenic luminous marine bacteria are used as sensors (bioluminescence). Substances in water effect the bacteria which in response change the intensity of emitted light. Light change is measured using a sensitive Luminometer. Core know how relates to bacterial behavior in response to chemicals’ presence in water. Proprietary reagents sensitize the bacteria and stabilize their operating conditions. Unique technological integration for on-line monitoring (electronics, mechanics, software, biology).

Core Technology - 2 Various applications: Toxicity, AOC, BOD, Biocide etc. Detection of a wide range of contaminants. Detection at very low concentrations. Highly reliable results within minutes. Long term storage in active state. Optional deployment - field or laboratory. Very easy to use with minimal training. Basic technology (ToxScreen) has been verified by EPA’s ETV. “Bacteria-based biosensors are ideal for use as early warning screening tools for drinking water security” (EPA).

AquaVerity Comprehensive, Early Warning Biomonitoring System to ensure water safety and quality. Continuously detects contamination events and issues real-time alerts. Significantly reduces the threats & risks associated with water contamination. Composed of hardware, software and consumables. Includes both continuous (on-line) and portable equipment.

Product Range

CCB-TOX Key element of any Early Warning System. Automatic water toxicity biomonitor . Continuously monitors chemical contamination events. On-Line - sends alerts in real-time. Sensitive to a broad range of contamination events. Reliable, cost-effective, & easy to operate

TOX-SPOT Easy to use portable toxicity biomonitor. Early warning of dangerous water contamination in emergency situations (spills, accidents, sabotage or terrorism).

TOX-SPOT LUM-KK-01 Rapid on site screening. ~15 minutes to determine changes in water quality in raw and treated drinking water .

TOX-SCREEN Rapid lab detection of chemical toxicity in various water sources. Screening of multiple samples. Semi-quantitative determining toxicity degree. Organics & heavy metals differentiation.

Early-AOC Test Kit Rapid Assimilable Organic Carbon measurement - within 2 hours. Monitor water at various pre- & post-filtration steps Optimize timing of filter backwash Provide early warning of membrane bio-fouling Predictive indication of bacterial re-growth Early warning of changes in bio-stability Reduce operation & maintenance costs

Early-BOD Test Kit Rapid Biochemical Oxygen Demand measurement - within 3-4 hours. The level of luminescence is proportional to the concentration of utilizable organic carbon in the sample.
