Hadrian Park Primary School Reading in Reception September 2016 Hadrian Park Primary School

Maths Parents Workshop - Calculations By the end of Reception (Early Learning Goals) Children should be able to: Read and understand simple sentences. Use phonic knowledge to decode regular words and read them aloud accurately. Read some common irregular words (the / my) Demonstrate an understanding when talking with others about what they have read. Hadrian Park Primary School Whitehall Infant School February 2013

In the English language we have….. 44 sounds We have more than 150 ways to represent 44 sounds, using the 26 letters in the alphabet. This means we have to group letters together to write some sounds. Here’s an example: pie light One of the most complex alphabetic codes in the world.

Aims of our Reading Meeting…… To find out how we teach Phonics in Reception To talk about the different reading activities your child will take part in. How you can support your child at home To watch a short Phonics session that the children will take part in this term. Hadrian Park Primary School

We love reading & writing…… We have a Phonics session everyday We love to play letter & word games!

Hadrian Park Primary School We love reading.... The children will read with an adult at least once a week. They will read with their Teacher in a Reading group every week The children will be getting letters to learn every week. We will put them in their Reading folder. Once the children begin to blend the letter sounds they will bring home ‘Blending Lotto’ games And lots more…….we’ll tell you what we do in our Newsletters and you will be able to see what we do on Tapestry. Hadrian Park Primary School

Learning letter sounds We teach the sounds first – in a specific order using Jolly Phonics. s a t i p n Pronunciation of the letter sounds is very important…….. Say ‘s’ not ‘suh’ ‘t’ not ‘tuh’ Hadrian Park Primary School

Resources we use at school ….and at home https://www.youtube.c om/watch?v=L_8Tj7u2xj We sing songs about each letter in the alphabet We play letter sound lotto at school and we bring them home too. m d p c s b

Hadrian Park Primary School What is Blending? Blending is the process of saying the individual sounds in a word the running them together to make the word. For instance sounding out d-o-g and making dog. It is a technique every child will need to learn, and it improves with practice. To start with you should sound out the word and see if a child can hear it, giving the answer if necessary. Some children take longer than others to hear this. They do get there, so don’t worry! Try little and often with words like b-u-s, t-o-p, c-a-t and h-e-n.  Hadrian Park Primary School

b i n Have a go…… We play ‘My turn, your turn’ We say the sounds first, the children have their turn. Always say the whole word after blending the individual sounds b i n Now it’s your turn.....

Red words! (Tricky words) We say these are words that don’t look the way they sound. the to we go I my said

Our Reading Books The children read words in the matched books. Each book is carefully matched to the sounds they can already read - setting them up for success. We would love to see pictures of your child reading their books at home so please upload pictures to Tapestry.

Visit the Library
