Shelley Schultz Lieutenant Governor Area 1 & 3 Spring Mtg April 5/6, 2017 MEMBERSHIP Shelley Schultz Lieutenant Governor

Membership trends from 2004-2017 874 (DOWN 1088 OR 3.67%) 3% Decline *The 2017 membership number of 28,589 is as of 28 February 2017.

Doctor, my club is under the weather! What can I do?

The Doctors are IN Retention Doctor (RD) ▪ Membership Doctor (MD) Fundraiser Doctor (FD)

Problem 1: Are members quitting the club? Are your meetings dull? Don’t start on time? Too long? Are your members less than enthusiastic? Overwhelmed? Overworked? Under-appreciated? OTHER?

You need to see the Retention Doctor (RD) CURES: Assign a mentor Organize social fun nights Make new members feel important and engaged Get new members involved quickly Ask all members to complete a Hobbies, Interest & Skills (HIS) Questionnaire OTHER Involved with a committee Mentor to sit with them at meetings and provide guidance to the new member is there a Fellowship committee? , ie) mini-putt, movies, bowling, wine & painting, cooking class, etc see Appendix B) to see the strengths and interests of ALL members. This will use members’ skills to their fullest potential

Benefits of Retention: Strength in numbers takes pressure off current members Participate in service projects that help women achieve their potential Advocate Zonta’s position on women’s issues locally and internationally Achieve greater impact internationally by combining our voices with like-minded organizations and the UN Build life-long friendships OTHER Quick survey

Problem 2: Is there a lot of work and too few members to help? Are the same people volunteering for everything?

You need to see the Membership Doctor (MD) CURES: Ask friends & family Create list of prospects Review the Zonta classification Membership nights to focus on “FUN with a purpose” Join the local Chamber of Commerce Look at sponsors from fundraising events Advertising via your club website, Facebook, Twitter, brochures, flyers, newsletters Giveaways: brochures, pens, calendars to promote the club and events OTHER See list of prospects)- think of people you can approach as a “warm” lead - sponsors - They are currently donating money and/or time, and familiar with Zonta, so ask if they’d like to be a member Fundraising events: ask if their email can be added to the data base to receive updates of future Zonta news and events Advertising via your club website, Facebook, Twitter, brochures, flyers, newsletters

Benefits of Membership: Spread the joy of Zonta Fun and Fellowship – FUN with a Purpose! Empower women around the globe Give back to the local community Envision a world in which women’s rights are recognized as human rights and every woman is able to achieve her full potential Scholarships to young women in areas of aerospace (Amelia Earhart), business (Jane M. Klausman) and Young Women in Public Affairs Strength in numbers takes pressure off current members -Think back to the reason you first joined Zonta.

Problem 3: Are you running the same fundraisers with declining attendance? Are your members tired of doing the same thing over and over? Are you unsure of the steps involved to get a fundraiser started?

You need to see the Fundraiser Doctor (FD) CURES: Hold a fundraiser brainstorming meeting Consider a change to the format or eliminate the event entirely Decide on the number of fundraisers your club wishes to hold Choose events that are manageable for your club size -In advance, ask members to bring 5 possible ideas and as a group, discuss the viability of each event -One large annual event or several smaller ones over the year -Some fundraisers require more volunteers than others,

Benefits: Raise more money so you can donate more locally and to ZI Foundation When you host a dinner, the same amount of work is involved whether you have 5 guests or 50 The community may be oversaturated with an event. It may be time to seek a unique fundraiser

Which doctor do you need to see?

MEMBER LIFE CYCLE MANAGEMENT Club boards have the task to manage each member actively during its Zonta Life! New members need information, welcoming and onboarding support, mentoring Existing members need to be activated and feel active club participation, friendship and attention, encouragement, recognition Very motivated members need to be trained and convinced to take a Zonta leader role in their club or elsewhere in the organization Even leavers may still promote Zonta. Stay in touch!

In partnership with engagement and retention to create happy clubs, Zonta will mobilize all clubs during the period April 2017- May 2018 to recruit new members with a 5% growth for the biennium!

RECRUITMENT BOOST: NEW MEMBERS & CLUBS AMBITION FOR EXISTING CLUBS The ZI objective is to achieve a 5% growth in global membership and 1 new club per district If every club recruits at least one new additional member – we will have 1100 new members! If every district adds at least one more club - we will have 480 new members This would give a total net increase of around 1600 members!
