The Parable of the Talents A man was going away, but before he went he called his workers together. He gave one worker five talents, another two talents and to a third he gave one talent. Then off he went.
The worker with five talents used them well and made five more The worker with five talents used them well and made five more. The worker with two talents used them well and made two more.
The third worker dug a hole in the ground and buried the talent he had been given, thinking it would be safe there.
One day the man came home. He called his workers together One day the man came home. He called his workers together. ‘Well, how did you get on while I was away?’ he asked.
The first worker showed him ten talents, twice as much as he had been given. ‘Well done!’ the man said.
The second worker showed him four talents, twice as much as he had been given. ‘Well done!’ the man said.
The third worker showed him only one talent. The man was annoyed The third worker showed him only one talent. The man was annoyed. ‘But I heard that you were a cross man’, the worker said, ‘and I thought you would be angry if I lost the talent you gave me. That is why I buried it where no one would find it.’
‘I gave you the talent and you made no use of it,’ the man scolded ‘I gave you the talent and you made no use of it,’ the man scolded. ‘So now I will take it from you and give it to the workers who will put it to good use for me.’
The Jesus went on to tell those who were listening to him that God would welcome all those whom he had blessed.
He would welcome those who had used their talents to feed the hungry; to get water for those who lived in drought; to provide clothes for those who had nothing to wear.
He would be pleased with those who used the life he with those who used the life he had given them to welcome the homeless; to take care of the sick; and to make contact with those whom many had ignored. ‘And,’ said Jesus, ‘God will say to those who have used well the life he gave them, ‘Well done! Welcome into my Kingdom.’
