ELIGIBILITY Youth Member Pope Pius XII Award Ad Altare Dei Award A registered Boy Scout of Catholic faith 13 and 14 years old Completed 6th grade before starting the program Active member of Troop for 6 months Application/Approval form signed A registered youth member (male or female) of the Boy Scouts of America of the Catholic faith. Has started ninth grade. Designed for age 16-18 year old, but all registered Venturers (male or female before their 21st birthday) and all registered Boy Scouts (in high school, before their 18th birthday) are eligible. Application/Approval form signed

PURPOSE of the Program Pope Pius XII Award Ad Altare Dei Award Help Catholic Scouts of the Roman Rite develop a fuller Christian way of life within the faith community Program is organized in chapters based on the seven Sacraments which are a primary means toward spiritual growth Help Catholic Scouts and Venturers develop a fuller Christian way of life within the faith community The program deals with different life choices (single, married, religious, ordained), occupations and ministries in the church as calls from God. It includes youth led discussions on current issues facing the church and society, which are normally included as part of a Pius XII retreat or day of recollection

PROGRAM Requirements Pope Pius XII Award Ad Altare Dei Award Ideal group size is 4-12, but may be run with smaller groups The program should be run by the candidates themselves, the adult serves as a facilitator A number of interviews and an investigation of a controversial issues facing the church or society are integral to the program All sections must be completed and signed off A retreat experience, ideally centered on the Pius XII program itself and a ministries service project (Chapter 5) are required Successfully complete PP XII Board of Review Pope Pius XII BOR is made up of former Pope Pius XII recipients with adult leaders acting in an advisory and supervisory capacity It is suggested that the group meet for 9-12 sessions. As the youth are older, 2 hour sessions seem to work well, and flexibility is often required in scheduling sessions and interview feedback’s. No changes permitted Additional requirements may not be added Group should be run using the Patrol Method Use of a Catholic Bible is required St. Joseph version of New American Bible used in program preparation Scout should be advancing in Scouting (not mandatory) Regular participation in Sunday worship Involved in formal religious education program All sections must be completed and signed off Attend annual Catholic Scout Retreat Weekend (last weekend in April) Successfully complete AAD Board of Review Program designed to be completed in 6-8 months [start beginning of school year] No changes permitted Additional requirements may not be added

Gain a better understanding of the sacraments and their meaning to the Catholic faith. Have an opportunity to share his faith and practice his religion among peers, while receiving guidance and feedback attuned to the ideals of Scouting. Examine how being a Christian affects his or her daily life in the real world. Be challenged to evaluate his or her personal talents and abilities in light of a possible choice of life state, occupation and ministry. Be challenged to discover how these life states, occupations and ministries help him or her become more active in the Catholic Christian faith community. Have an opportunity to share his or her faith and practice his or her religion among peers, while receiving guidance and feedback attuned to the ideals of Scouting.

Help the Scout experience Christ’s deep love for them as individuals (not dependent on their behavior) Help the Scout go beyond the surface answers of childhood Encourage greater participation of Catholic Scouts/Venturers in the religious programs of the Church Promote the Spiritual component of Scouting within the parish and unit. (A Scout is Reverent) Help create an atmosphere conducive to the development of religious vocations. Provide guidance and assistance to non-Catholic members of the unit and in neighboring units, urging them to participate in the religious program of their own faith.

Experience different Eucharist or meal settings Do not focus on Mass – focus on sacrificial meal They have the power within themselves to make the Eucharist meal more enjoyable, meaningful, and personal ‘family’ gatherings Last Supper
