Big Picture of Ephesians (REVIEW): Chapters 1-3: Offers hope to the Gentiles We were all once ‘dead’ and ‘children of wrath’ We can now be part of the inheritance through Christ
Reminder that Christianity is a Team Sport Turning the Corner: Ch.4 V. 1-16 Reminder that Christianity is a Team Sport We were uniquely gifted and called to use the gifts for the body (v. 16-17) There is strength in numbers “Bearing with one another in love” V.2 No longer children, tossed around and carried away by craftiness V.14
Turning the Corner….Again V.17-24 Paul is getting to the heart of true change- the kind that brings about a new life Reminder: Paul spent the first 3 chapters giving hope and encouragement to the Gentiles: “No longer walk as the Gentiles do in the futility of their minds”
Pattern For Destruction V. 18-19 Hardness Ignorance Darkness Recklessness
Pattern for new life V.20-24 Put off old self Be Renewed in your mind Must acknowledge corruptness Must fight the urge to return to- like a well worn pair of shoes Be Renewed in your mind This is the ‘secret sauce’ of true change This can only be accomplished through constant refinement through studying his Word and through the transformational work of the Spirit Put on new self V. 25-32 gives examples of what the ‘new self’ looks like This has to follow the renewing of your mind or else any change is mere appearances and will not sustain
A continual process Although our salvation is secure, we must constantly fight our flesh that wants to rob us of the true life He has for us Phillipians 2:12-13: …” work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure” 1 Corinthians 9:26-27 “ So I do not run aimlessly, I do not box as one beating the air. But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified”
