American Indians Two major language groups found here Algonquian and Iroguois Typically relied upon for trade and did not make war on settlers Pennsylvania William Penn insisted that Pennsylvania settlers compensated for their lands United all of coast under English rule Economicaclly Region’s colonies developed strong merchant centers but also farmed significant amounts of corn and wheat Truly a bridge between New England and Southern colonies as a mixture of both

Pennsylvania William Penn receives land grant in North America as repayment of a debt the king owed his father Established Pennsylvania as Quaker Colony 1682 Penn belonged to religious group Quakers (The Religious Society of Friends) Persecuted in England for their beliefs Basic ideology: everyone possesses an “inner light” through which individuals are capable of their own religious interpretation without the need for formal clergy. Women Were afforded full participation in the faith, as they too possessed as inner light. Religious toleration/treatment of Native Americans Believed in toleration and fair treatment
