Essential Question: Why do people move? SSUSH1 – Compare and Contrast the development of English settlement and colonization during the 17th century Essential Question: Why do people move?

d. Explain the development of the Mid-Atlantic Colonies, including but not limited to reasons established, impact of location and place, relations with American Indians, and economic development New Netherland Established by Dutch in 1614 Founded as a private money-making venture Trade was centered in New Amsterdam (Present day NYC) Location made it attractive for English annexation English seized control in 1664 Governor Peter Stuyvesant negotiated colony transfer peacefully

Mid-Atlantic Colonies created from New Netherlands colony New York New Jersey Pennsylvania Delaware Geographic Good harbors and river systems that shaped development Hudson/Delaware River Provided highways to interior of North America Furs acquired inland from American Indians were traded for European tools and firearms Farmers used to ship wheat and other agricultural goods Provided access to imported manufactured goods

American Indians Two major language groups found here Algonquian and Iroguois Typically relied upon for trade and did not make war on settlers Pennsylvania William Penn insisted that Pennsylvania settlers compensated for their lands United all of coast under English rule Economicaclly Region’s colonies developed strong merchant centers but also farmed significant amounts of corn and wheat Truly a bridge between New England and Southern colonies as a mixture of both

New York/New jersey King Charles II gave to brother James as proprietary colony in 1664...James was, you guessed it, the Duke of York…New York Orginal settlers (dutch) were allowed to stay, speak their own language, and worship as they pleased Preserved cultural and religious diversity Some parts of New York still reflect old colony Wall Street https://vimeo.com/219103640 Okay okay it was not actually built to keep out British…but hey it’s Hollywood, It was built to keep out Native New Jersey Well New York was just too big to administer sooo James gave his two friends Lord John Berkeley and Sir George Carteret part of land which became New Jersey Land was sold dirt cheap to attract settlers

Pennsylvania William Penn receives land grant in North America as repayment of a debt the king owed his father Established Pennsylvania as Quaker Colony 1682 Penn belonged to religious group Quakers (The Religious Society of Friends) Persecuted in England for their beliefs Basic ideology: everyone possesses an “inner light” through which individuals are capable of their own religious interpretation without the need for formal clergy. Women Were afforded full participation in the faith, as they too possessed as inner light. Religious toleration/treatment of Native Americans Believed in toleration and fair treatment
