Wind Turbines This is my teams entry into the bp stem Challenge. This PowerPoint is our entry to the wind turbine renewable energy challenge

Meet the Team Mohammed. H.Iqbal Team Leader, Yaseen Singer Head Engineer, Anthony Moyo Design tester and photographer Parvez shaik Assistant engineer

Why we picked wind turbines. Wind turbines are the future source of renewable energy. We saw that one of the biggest issues of our generation is global warming and the reason why global warming is such a big issue is because of all the fossil fuels that are being used. We must begin improving wind turbines and other renewable energy sources to make them much more efficient, so that global warming won’t be as much of an issue as it currently is.

Our research Myself, Yaseen and Anthony went on the internet to research what wind turbines today look like and what the problems are that are holding it back from being earths number one supplier of energy. We discovered that although wind turbines are amazing they are just not efficient enough and we will have to find a way to cause less friction and a way to make 100% of the energy into electrical energy and not waste energy, in forms such as heat and noise.

Facts and figure A single wind turbine can power 100 homes Windmills have been being used since 2000 B.C. when they were first developed in Persia and China. Wind energy is amazing because its clean source of energy and causes barley any pollution.  The wind energy industry is expanding massively and it is predicted that by 2050 one third of our energy will be from wind energy.

Our original thoughts Hypothesis If we make the blades more streamlined, finding a way to cause less friction in the wind turbine then it should transfer more energy. It will do this as less energy will be transferred into heat, sound and other unwanted energies.

Our idea We used light blades made of paper we then put them into the polystyrene ball at an angle so that no matter which direction the wind comes from it will spin with maximum efficiency. Our design has 4 blades that are equally spaced as we believe gives enough room for wind flow while still being able to be pushed by the wind because of its lightness and less weight, while also losing less energy through wobbling and shaking. The distinction between our three models is material and shape. We believe that shape material and angle are the key factors. We had gone through around 6 different designs before eventually settling on 3 designs.

Testing Our head tester, Anthony Moyo, tested the design by placing the blades on a stand and putting a standing fan in front we tested each blade three times on 3 different speeds. All in all we came to the answer that our best design was the light paper design. It gave us the best speed and after further testing we discovered when we angled the blades in a different manner we got even better results than all of our past ones.

conclusion In conclusion we found that our first blade made out of a type of paper was the best in terms of the speed it took to lift the mass.
