A range of online resources is used to develop a wider comprehension of the current issues covered. Students will develop their understanding of these issues by using a variety of academic and language skills, and there will be many opportunities for discussions and debates. Press ‘Esc’ to exit

English Through the Media Part B: Issues that Unite and Divide People This interactive course follows on from ETTM A and focuses on issues that unite or divide people: the use of social media, educational practices, discrimination and food waste. This course uses images, videos and stories in the news/media as a starting point. Students will develop their understanding of these issues through regular discussion, debate and mini-presentations. English Through the Media Part A: Understanding Media in the UK This interactive course focuses on increasing your understanding of the UK media, which will help to you understand how people in the UK think, what they believe and why. Reading newspaper and magazine articles, and watching videos will enhance your understanding of each theme, while helping you to develop your reading skills and vocabulary. Weekly discussions, debates and mini-presentations will help you to become a more confident speaker. I am not sure how to make and deliver a presentation in English I agree with at least 2 of the following: I am not sure about what makes a good presentation. I need to develop my confidence in giving presentations. I need more key vocabulary and delivery techniques. Presentation Skills: Plan, Practise, Deliver This course aims to build your confidence in speaking in an academic environment. You will develop essential skills for giving presentations, such as planning, the ability to use key vocabulary, and delivery techniques. This is useful for those with IELTS 6.0 or below in Speaking or Listening (or equivalent). A range of audio and visual materials will be used. Press ‘Esc’ to exit

At sound level I agree with at least 2 of the following: I often mispronounce individual words or sounds. Other people sometimes misunderstand words I say in English. I would like to understand what my own pronunciation difficulties are. Building Pronunciation Skills: Tricky Sounds This course focuses on the pronunciation of many English sounds, e.g. vowel sounds, like short ‘i’ and long ‘ee’, and groups of consonants, like ‘str’, ‘kt’ and ‘spl’. It also looks at how native speakers link spoken words together. The course includes time to practise speaking and to record your own voice to improve your awareness of your own pronunciation. I think my voice is ‘flat’ or not varied enough when I speak English. I would like to understand what my own pronunciation difficulties are.. Pronunciation and Intonations for Perfect Presentations This course aims to build your confidence in speaking in front of an audience. Through presentation-style activities it will help you to understand how to use your voice more effectively by learning about word and sentence stress and intonation (the rise and fall of your voice). Academic Listening & Note-Taking: Making Sense of What You Hear This course aims to build your confidence in dealing with listening and note-taking, mainly in academic lectures. It is particularly useful for those with IELTS 6.5 or below in Speaking or Listening (or equivalent). The course will focus on a range of useful skills and strategies for improving your understanding of lectures and taking notes. I want to write more accurately Academic Grammar and Vocabulary Part A: Getting it Right This course aims to provide students with knowledge and practice of the key elements of grammar and vocabulary for academic writing. It covers the areas where students tend to make mistakes, but also gives them an opportunity to assess their individual needs, as well as to become familiar with the tools to enhance learning independently. It is particularly useful for students who have a writing score of IELTS 6.0 or below (or equivalent). Part A focuses on academic style, tenses, sentence structure, vocabulary range and accuracy, and error correction. Academic Grammar and Vocabulary Part B: Assessing Your Ideas Clearly This course aims to provide students with further knowledge and practice of the key elements of grammar and vocabulary for academic writing, and further enhance independent learning skills. It is particularly useful for students who have a writing score of IELTS 6.0 or below (or equivalent). Part B focuses on writing definitions, using modal verbs and cautious language, using connectors and reference words, using the student’s own voice (e.g. using persuasive language), researching and referencing vocabulary, and making improvements independently.
