CED studio & Computer Lab B&W Laser Printers A Xerox Phaser 4600 Monochrome Laser Printer (postscript) - duplex

Xerox Phaser 4600 – Paper, Ink and Jams Basic Overview video about the printer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ndLji4sZNBo&list=PLN38aQa-c2o_y0jvvduCp79HpGLXkAjJs  Clearing a paper jam video (Xerox) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=axAjiaoDnQ0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bmCzx8jQAk0  (CED Help Desk) Xerox-Phaser-4600-Clearing-Common-Jams.pdf Loading paper   (Xerox) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=olpLCIQAD4Q  (CED Help Desk) Xerox-Phaser-4600-Loading-Paper.pdf Xerox Phaser 4600 Vendor Manual XeroxPhaser4600Manual.pdf General Comments These printers cannot accommodate file names >255 characters so keep your names short Cannot reliably print directly from Google Docs, causes print queue jams You can print B&W on color laser printers but it will cost the same as color prints (so use these B&W machines)

Xerox Phaser 4600 – media

CED studio & Computer Lab Color Laser Printers HP Color LaserJet 5550ps Color Laser Printer – duplex and with an additional sheet feed can do tabloid size

HP Color Lasers – Paper, Ink and Jams HP Color Lasers General HP-Color-LaserJet-5550-UserGuide Loading paper HP-Color-LaserJet-5550-Loading-Paper.pdf Print Queues https://support.hp.com/us-en/product/HP-Deskjet-5550-Color-Inkjet-Printer/71895/model/71897/document/c02205477/ Loading paper video  HP-Color-LaserJet-5550-Clearing-Common-Jams.pdf General Comments You can print B&W on color laser printers but it will cost the same as color prints To print B&W you will need to use the gray-scale or B&W setting (better to use the B&W printers) These printers run hot, too much ink saturation will cause jams With heavy graphics do not exceed 150 dpi or >75% ink saturation

HP Color Lasers – Approved Media Media Type Paper (plain, light, intermediate, heavy, extra heavy, glossy, heavy glossy, high gloss images, tough, recycle) Envelopes Laser transparencies Cardstock Weight: 200 g/m2 max, but duplex up to 120 g/m2 DPI: 600 dpi max but this is too high for “plain paper” insert glossy/matte paper to hold this level of ink saturation

CED 214 Computer Lab Epson Photo Printers Epson Stylus Pro 3880 Inkjet Printer Professional photo printer Paper sizes up to 17” x 24” Does not do paper rolls, can hold 50 sheets

Epson – Paper, Ink and Jams HP Color Lasers General Can occasionally have slight trace of banding if document is heavily black Can print borderless https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XQxCxX7wSPE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CozOaUHhRjI 1:15 ink replacement Epson User Guide pdf Epson Use Videos: https://epson.com/Support/Printers/Professional-Imaging-Printers/Epson-Stylus-Pro-Series/Epson-Stylus-Pro-3880/s/SPT_CA61201-VM#video Color Epson Manage Color pdf Specialty Papers Loading Fine Art Paper: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qR1Fo3ux1f8 Loading Thicker Paper: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pBzYAq3EP44 Loading Epson Canvas Paper: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z_s3Vw-oun8

Epson 3880 – Approved Media Approved Media Types (our printers do not accept paper rolls, sheet feed only) Epson Media: Ink Jet Transparencies (resolution to 360 dpi or “text”) Photo Quality Ink Jet Paper Archival Matte Paper Premium Glossy or Semigloss Photo Paper Hot Press Bright Traditional Photo Paper Premium Luster Photo Paper Glossy Photo Paper Ultrasmooth Fine Art Paper Velvet Fine Art paper Cold Press Bright or Natural WaterColor Paper Radiant White Hot Press Bright or Natural Matte Paper Heavy Weight Enhance Matte Paper or Posterboard Red River Paper: Polar Pearl Metallic (from 4”x6” up to 8.5”x25”) UltraPro Satin UltraPro Gloss 2.0 Polar Matte Aurora Natural (fine art, cotton)

Printing Tips

General notes on printing costs & refunds CED has photo-quality Epson ink jets (#214) for higher quality outputs Printing and plotting costs include the cost of supplied paper EXCEPT the Epson printers: you must supply your own paper No refund for bad prints on paper that CED did not supply No refunds if using Bristol and Newsprint CED refunds print errors which are mechanical No refunds for user errors (specified on the Web, on posters and in the HelpDesk system) Printing costs are posted on the CED web site, on posters, and visible from your PaperCut account

Cloud Printing Students with CED computer and print accounts can access Studio Cloud Printing This allows a print job to be sent from your laptop, via the web, to a laser printer in the Studio or 477's B&W laser printer (which can do tabloid and duplex) Cloud printing does not work for plotters or for any remote printing into the Computer Labs due to its potential interference with instruction Critical to its operations, you need to select both a printer to send your job to as well as the exact specifications, for instance, "letter color one-sided" or "tabloid b&w duplex” Instructions for Cloud Printing are located in the Help Desk system and walk you through what to do to access and use the system Known issues: No two-sided printing on floors 5, 6, and 7 Two-sided B&W printing is available in 477 during the normal office hours (M-F, 9- 5) No Cloud Printing to plotters No Cloud Printing from mobile devices (iPad, iPhone, Android devices) Two-sided printing formats pages so they flip on long side PhD "print only" accounts will allow PhD students to Cloud Print to the printer in the PhD room or 477 only

PRINTING – COLOR ISSUES For many reasons, it is difficult to impossible to make your output match the colors you see on the screen Monitors and scanners are based on an "additive" color system, using the RGB (red, green, blue) color space, while the plotters are based on a "subtractive" system and use CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow, black) Different monitors can vary in many ways, including calibration, variances in the phosphors and bit depths. Also the range of colors is widely different, with monitors displaying many more colors than any printing device. Remember colors will look different on different types of paper If precise color rendition is important Consider doing a small test print Print on the Epson color photo inkjet in 214 Or the color photo color plotter in 477
