“The problem is never how to get new, innovative thoughts into your mind, but how to get the old ones out.” - Dee Hock
What have we learned from the past to move forward in our industry? The Old Days Circulation, ad revenue couldn’t do anything but go up. Big money….no competition Big plants….multiple plants Large manpower requirements….remember the days of 16 men on a press One product model….newspapers Single focus from the top to the bottom….the daily miracle The New World Circulation and ad revenue declining….when will it level off Little money …. competition everywhere Stuck with big plants….multiple plants go away Production becomes the cost saving universe through cuts in web and manpower Question becomes how can we do more with our equipment as idle time rises Focus is now on everything with less people….print, web, mobile, etc.
Where does that leave Production / Print Reactionary mode to corporate and publishers Sit and wait to see what happens….is there any influence we can bring Print or be printed....choice Consolidation….result No plant is sacred ground We understand what is going on around Production / Print, how do we influence the outcome. How do we move forward from what we see around us. Make our focus print, its our business Everyone in production is an analyst focused on the most efficient ways to get things done, this can never stop We must get better continually Research and understand the cost effective technologies that can help your production and save you money.
Pressline Services focus for promoting print into the future 100% of our business is newspaper printing from Canada to South America. Our focus is simple “what can we do for newspapers to help wring every dime out of printing” what is the lowest cost common denominator to printing. Two things stood out to us at Pressline as the last cost savings horizon. FORMAT PRINTING PLANTS
Pressline Services focus for the future (FORMAT) Format has been the untouchable since the beginning of print. We have cut 10” off the web in the last 15 years and if we go back further in time it’s more like 20” , but have not addressed the length of the newspaper at all. Until a few years ago when the Columbus Dispatch and the Cincinnati Enquirer adopted Pressline’s 3volution or 3v 3around printing. This allowed for a cut-off change and an increase in production speed never before achieved in legacy equipment.
Pressline Services 3V PRODUCTION COLLECT MODEL PRODUCTION STRAIGHT MODEL 50% MORE SPEED More through put – Less equipment Less equipment – Less consumables, maintenance, utilities and press crews. Shorter run times Later deadlines Print more products Works well with sites that are use to running straight – offers current paging and color (max 9 webs) PRODUCTION COLLECT MODEL 50% MORE COLOR / SECTIONS More color/sections with current equipment Less webs (max 3 webs) Less Equipment - Less consumables, maintenance, utilities and press crews. Less capital dollars All color press- May need some reconfiguration Current collect speed
Pressline Services focus for the future (PRINTING PLANTS) Printing plants built in the 70’s and 80’s were built for the equipment that was being purchased. Huge chunks of land massive multi-level facilities Designs that didn’t always support work flow as much as old work rules and the printing press that was purchased Separation of pressroom and mailroom that requires miles of conveying Newsprint storage way off press Pre-press in a totally different area because that’s where it landed. These issues are all part of the cost structure of todays newspaper and cannot be supported in todays printing environment.
Pressline Services FlexPress Building Benefits Warehouse environment Single floor production Less floor space Less utilities cost Press / Production Benefits Less manpower and maintenance Flexible color capabilities Multiple presses within the zones New print opportunities Build for the present expands for the future Adaptable to multiple web widths, 3V or Stitch Tab
