Starter/Bell Work 4.14.2017 Did you know math is key in making a good composition in art. What makes a good compositing (guess)? How do you think you could use math to create art? What do you think the rule of thirds is (guess)? Draw what you think non-objective art looks like (guess, for those who took Art A this is a review question)?

Agenda 4.14.2017 Go over what we did last time. Talk about creating a good composition with the rule of thirds The golden ratio, and implied lines. Go over non-objective art and how we will use composition to make good non-objective art using glass. Make our own glass pendants and talk about the fusing process.

Golden Ratio The golden ratio describes the perfect symmetrical relationship between two proportions. Approximately equal to a 1:1:61 ratio. But we do not want good composition we want great composition! To Begin All you really need to know is this: a good composition is nothing more than a pleasing arrangement of shapes, colors and tones. But we do not want good composition we want great composition!

Rule of thirds This is where you break up an image into thirds both vertically and horizontally. You will notice the one on the left focuses on the people where the one on the right focuses on the pillar. This is how the rule of thirds works. This makes it so the one dominant item is no longer dominant and the image can look balanced.

Non-Objective work Wassily Wassilyevich Kandinsky was an influential Russian painter and art theorist. He is credited with painting one of the first purely abstract works. Non-objective means there is no defined object it is purely design.

We are going to be melting the glass in a kiln(it fires/cooks clay). How to fuse glass We are going to be melting the glass in a kiln(it fires/cooks clay). Like ceramics we use a kiln to create our projects. Unlike ceramics we will increase the temperatures very fast in the kiln than let them cool very slowly.

Fused glass Each of you has a piece of glass. You will design a non-objective design by using either the rule of thirds or the golden ratio. You will break up the glass, bend the glass, and place the glass onto the larger piece using the glue provided and a small paint brush. The assignment will be due at the end of class (your grade is dependent on you completing the assignment today not that it is fired or not) If you have already paid your class fee & brought me the receipt you will have your glass fired first. If you have not paid your class fee your piece will wait until you turn in your receipt this year, to fire it. If you do not pay your class fee by April 30th the piece will be disassembled and recycled for future classes. If you are done early, work on your incomplete Ogden Trails Network Competition piece(supplies are on the back counter)
