The Byzantine Empire fell and people from there came to Europe. They took libraries and works of art, containing many ancient sources with them, unknown to medieval Europe. The first Academy was founded in Florence.

Works of the three great masters of the Italian Renaissance mark this period Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519) Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475-1564) Raphael (1483-1520)

‘LAST SUPPER’ by Leonardo da Vinci shows a scene of Christ's last meal with his disciples. It is believed that the work shows the moment when Jesus pronounces the words that one of his apostles will betray him.

In 1492, in search of a trade route to Asia, the Spanish monarchs approved Christopher Columbus plan to go to the west across the Atlantic Ocean in search of ‘India’. He landed on the continent, opening for Europeans "New World", America.

In 1498 a Portuguese expedition led by Vasco da Gama was able to reach India, having rounded Africa and opening a direct trade route to Asia. Soon after the Portuguese had gone even further to the east, reaching the "Spice Islands" in 1512 and landed in China a year later.
