Advances in what field helped European nations dominate the 1600s and 1700s? arts and music philosophy and education science and technology politics and government

European Colonial Expansion Indicator 7-1.5: Compare the differing ways that European nations developed political and economic influences, including trade and settlement patterns, on the continents of Asia, Africa and the Americas.

How did European expansion develop influences in Asia? European influence in Asia took place through trade: Asian societies were advanced, so Europeans treated them as equals. Europeans did not colonize Asia. They established trading posts. Europeans traded gold, silver, guns for spices, silk, tea, porcelain. The influences of trade with Europe on Asia: created a merchant class in Asian societies tied to trade w/Europe spread of Christianity to Asia China and Japan returned to isolation by limiting trade w/Europe to protect their culture

European Expansion in Asia Cartoon Strip Create a cartoon strip to show how Europeans expanded into Asia and what impact they had on Asian societies. Your cartoon strip should have at least 4 panels. Include a caption with each panel to explain. Include the following information: goods traded to/from each how Europeans expanded into Asia relationship between Asians and Europeans impact of trade with Europe on Asia

They conquered and colonized Asia. How was Europeans’ relationship with Asia different from their relationship with Africa and the Americas? They conquered and colonized Asia. They had little or no contact with Asia. They never reached Asia by sea. They treated Asians like equals and did not colonize their lands.

How did European expansion develop influences in Africa? Europeans influenced Africa through the slave trade: Europeans acquired slaves by trade w/African tribes Triangular trade: 1, Europeans traded manufactured goods (guns and cloth) to African tribes for slaves; 2, Europeans traded the slaves to their colonies in the Americas for cash crops (sugar, tobacco, rice, indigo); 3, Europeans sold cash crops in Europe for profit The influences of European expansion on Africa: Increased warfare between tribes over captives to sell to Europeans the loss of workers led to economic problems in most African societies

RAFT Writing: The Middle Passage RAFT is a strategy for writing. It stands for Role, Audience, Format, Topic. Role Audience Format Topic This is who you are pretending to be. You will write from this point of view. This is who you are writing to. Keep in mind who will be reading your work. This could be a newspaper, diary, letter, etc. This will affect the style, whether formal or informal. This is what you are writing about. A freed slave writing about his experiences on a slave ship. People you are trying to convince that slavery is bad. Letter to the editor Your experiences on a slave ship traveling the Middle Passage.

How did European expansion impact African societies in the 1600s and 1700s? Tribal wars increased as strong tribes captured their neighbors to trade for goods. Education increased as Europeans established schools. Diseases spread by the Europeans killed most of the African population. The African economy grew as Europeans bought African goods.

How did European expansion develop influences in the Americas? Europeans influenced the Americas by colonization (controlling an area and sending people to live there). European nations that colonized the Americas: Spain, Portugal, England, France, the Netherlands. Spain colonized the largest area because they were first to explore. The Treaty of Tordesillas was an agreement that divided the Americas between Portugal (got Brazil) and Spain (everything else). In Spanish and Portuguese colonies with gold and silver, trade was the basis of interaction.

Europeans developed three types of colonies/settlements in the Americas: Plantation colonies: Slaves grew cash crops on plantations for their master’s profit developed by Spain in Caribbean and Portugal in Brazil (later by England, France, the Netherlands) Trading Post Empire: trading posts on rivers to trade guns and cloth to Indians for furs good relations w/Indians (traded w/them instead of taking their land) the Dutch in NY and the French in Canada/Mississippi River Valley True colonial settlements: large numbers sent to live in an area developed by the English in the thirteen colonies in North America

The influences of European expansion on the Americas Political influences: Spain/Portugal: had a strong, central monarchy that kept a close watch on their colonies by appointing viceroys to rule England: allowed their colonies to have a representative government similar to their own Social influences: Spain/Portugal: spread Catholic churches to their colonies England: spread Protestant churches to its colonies French influence declined because they lost their land to England in the French and Indian War.
