GAMES, GAMES, GAMES (part I) Meeting Plan GATHERING (5 minutes) As Scouts enter, hand them the HOW MANY TEAMS word search puzzle and have them take a pencil from the pencil bucket. Ask them to settle in their seats and start working on the puzzle. OPENING (7 minutes): Flag Ceremony/Pledge of Allegiance/Scout Oath and Law Scout Law POINT OF THE WEEK: TRUSTWORTHY – Trustworthy means you are honest. You do what you say you will do. People can depend on you. As we talk about GAMES today, you can see that when playing a game, being TRUSTWORTHY to follow the rules is important. When someone cheats at a game, they are not being trustworthy. INTRODUCTION – 3 minutes SCOUTS – As you may have guessed by our gathering, today we are going to talk about TEAMS. We are all members of LOTS of different teams. Usually, people think of SPORTS when they hear the word team, but who can name SOME OTHER TYPES OF TEAMS we belong to? (Solicit answers: Family, grade/class/school, Church, Den/Pack/Cub Scouts, other activities. What are some things you need to do as PART OF A TEAM? (Solicit answers: be nice to team members, follow team rules, do work assigned, contribute to the team, be a good sport.)

LEADER LEAD PACK DISCUSSION -- GOOD SPORTSMANSHIP (4 min.) LEADER NOTES IF the PE coach is available (or other suitable adult), you could ask them to come to the first few minutes of the meeting to discuss SPORTSMAN SHIP and what being a good sport looks like, how a good sport acts, and why it is important. If they can attend, then allow about 5 – 7 minutes for this discussion. ALTERNATIVELY, you could follow the discussion & brief game below. LEADER LEAD PACK DISCUSSION -- GOOD SPORTSMANSHIP (4 min.) Raise you hand if you like to WIN! Yes, everyone likes to win, don’t we! That’s normal. But do you win all the time? No, no team wins all the time. Even the longest “winning streaks” come to an end sometime. So sometimes you will win and sometimes you will lose. It’s just as important to be a GOOD SPORT when you WIN as when you loose. What’s a good sport? You tell me …. (Solicit answers: being nice, polite, courteous, not teasing, not bullying, not booing, congratulating the winner if you lose, saying “good game” to the loser if you win. Not crying, or being mad.) As being a GOOD SPORT means following the rules, it’s important to KNOW what the rules are. So it’s important to listen to the directions to the game and any instructions from your team leader or coach. Who’s hear the saying, “It’s not whether you win or lose, but how you play the game?” That says it all. If you play your best, play fair, follow the rules, then you should have fun regardless of whether you win or lose. Today we are going to play some games. WE ARE PLAYING THESE GAMES to have FUN. You won’t get anything if you win. You won’t get anything if you lose. BUT LET US ALL PRACTICE BEING A GOOD SPORT TODAY and EVERY DAY.

LEARNING ACTIVITIES & GAMES— GAME 1 IF THE SHOE FITS (Tiger book, page 46) (10 minutes): You can play this game by DEN or by Pack depending on how much adult help you have. If you play by PACK, you may want to shorten the “introduction phase” to keep the game brief. Have everyone take off ONE SHOE. Take ALL the shoes (by Den or by Pack) and put them in a pile. Say “ready, set, go!” and ask the Scouts to run in an get a shoe (NOT their own). Then, they have to find the “mate” to the shoe. Upon finding the match, they should ask the owner of the shoe their NAME and 1 – 3 other things about themselves: For example: Favorite color, Favorite Sports Team, how many brothers/sisters, etc. You can make up the question to best suit your group. When everyone has been “matched” … form a circle and each Scout can introduce their “shoe match” and say the 1 – 3 things they’ve learned about them. AFTER THE GAME: Point out that this was a game that was fun for everyone. It was NOT COMPETITIVE as there was no winner or loser. Everyone got to play equally. Being a good sport was easy as there was no competition. Now, let’s play a game where there is a bit of FRIENDLY competition. GAME 2 – FOREHEAD SQUEEZE RELAY (Bear book, page 95) (12 minutes): Set-up: Play by Den or divide into equal groups – the game will go “faster” the more teams you have (fewer pairs/team). Have Scouts in each team pair up based on height. If you have odd numbers, one Scout can “go” twice. Have a start and finish line. This is a RELAY game. At “GO” each team sends one Scout pair from the start to finish line. They walk facing each other with a tennis ball (or similar object) squeezed between their foreheads. If they drop the ball before reaching the finish line, they need to go back to “start” and start over. When they successfully cross the finish line, they need to take the ball and run it back to the NEXT Scout pair in their team. Winner is team that finishes first.

LEADER LEAD PACK DISCUSSION -- TEAM EXPERIENCE AFTER RELAY GAME (5 min.) After the relay game, have everyone sit down (in a circle) and talk about the following: Did you do your best? Did you have fun? What made the game fun? Did you display good sportsmanship? Give examples? What was hard about the game? What points of the Scout Law relate to the game (Helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, cheerful)? What did you have to balance (besides the ball!) in playing the game (speed vs. risk of dropping ball/starting over) GAME 3 – CREATE YOUR OWN GAME (15 min.) Ask for a few ideas on how to make this relay game DIFFERENT … that can be done with the materials AT HAND (such as a 3 legged race … using Scout belt to tie the legs), blindfolded relay of some sort, etc. Don’t spend too much time deciding on options … just get a FEW ideas. Pick the 3 best (most feasible ideas) and have them vote on 1. Play that version of the game.
