Beta: Above and Beyond State Beta Club Conference Myrtle Beach February 10-12, 2017

Where are we staying? At the beach, of course!

Royale Palms Condominiums Luxurious tower attached to the Hilton Myrtle Beach Resort, location of the conference 2 bedroom condos with kitchen and living area

What happens at conference? Talent and academic competitions Election of State Officers Group activities Guest Speakers Meet the best and brightest of SC Betas Dance till you drop!

Academic Competitions Division I- Grades 9&10 Division II- Grades 11&12 Agriculture Language Arts Math Science Social Studies Spanish One person per division Multiple choice questions One hour time limit No electronic devices

Advertising Design One team of 2-4 members This team competition will allow students to demonstrate their creative ability and attention to details as they create a visually appealing message. Teams will be given an advertising prompt at the beginning of the competition and given two hours to create their design. Teams will also write an explanation to communicate the elements of design and concept.

Banner Competition This is a club entry and must be made by Beta members. The banner must adhere to the convention theme. Originality, craftsmanship, and interpretation and illustration of the theme are important.

Character Skit Three or more students The 3-5 minute skit must be on the Beta ideals of character and this year’s convention theme - “Beta-Above and Beyond”. Creativity, originality, and coordination are important.

Creative Writing One person per school Creative writing of 300-500 words in essay format Students must record their own word count Ninety (90)-minute time limit No pre-written materials allowed Each student must bring: dictionary and/or thesaurus Subject to be assigned at the beginning of the competition

Living Literature An opportunity for students to present their interpretation of a scene from a work of literature. Any form of literature Kind of like a wax museum

Onsite Art Competitions Acrylic Painting Pencil Colored Pencil One student per club in each category Still life objects will be set up by coordinator or designated person.

Poetry One entry per school Written onsite 90 minute time limit Topic assigned at the beginning of the competition

Quiz Bowl Four member team Preliminary consisting of a multiple choice exam if more than 8 teams enter Top 8 advance to oral rounds Single elimination

Robotics Showcase A team of 4-8 members will bring a pre-constructed robot that addresses the 2016-17 Robotics Challenge: Movers, Shakers, Creators

Scrapbook The purpose of the scrapbook competition is to showcase the accomplishments of the individual chapters as well as to showcase the creative spirit of the members. All work is done by members. Judged on artwork, content, and theme

Show Choir A group of 12+ members will perform a 3-6 minute choral repertoire of their choice.

Speech One student per division 2-3 minutes Original No note cards Persuasive or informative

Spotlight on Service Each club submits one free-standing trifold board that showcases a service focus in your club.

Talent Competitions Group competition Special competition 5 or more participants Timing begins with the first note of music, sound or action OR Special competition 1-4 persons

Technology A club project designed to encourage students to use technology to create a presentation that adheres to their interpretation of the topic. Completed and judged prior to the convention

Visual Arts Provides students the opportunity to showcase their artistic talents and creative abilities. Students will bring finished pieces of art Photography Digital Art Painting Fiber Arts Woodworking Mixed Media Drawing Sculpture Recyclable Art Watercolor Hand-made jewelry

Logistics Leave Westside at 7 a.m. Friday Return Sunday at 2:00 6 students per room 1 King bed 2 queen beds Pull-out sofa We try to include some fun time away from the convention if possible. Activities in the past include going to the Tanger Outlets, Broadway at the Beach, and an all- you-can-eat seafood buffet.

Cost & Deadlines $150- $10 discount given for participation in a competition ($20 max) We will possible conduct fundraisers. Will need money for meals and you can bring food Must purchase a t-shirt First payment of $50 due Tuesday, Nov. 22nd 2nd payment of $50 due Friday, December 16th. 3rd payment of $50 due Friday, January 13th. PAYMENTS ARE NON-REFUNDABLE DEADLINES ARE FIRM!!!!!

Behavior Betas are expected to act with the highest of behavior standards. Chaperones must know your whereabouts AT ALL TIMES. Dress code should be observed anytime you leave your hotel room. All activities are required. Curfew must be observed. No girls in boys rooms and no boys in girls rooms. No alcoholic beverages, drugs, or tobacco in any form including e- cigarettes You may have your cell phone at all times, but they must be off during the 3 general sessions. Failure to follow the rules will result in your parents being called to come pick you up and dismissal from Beta Club.

If you want to go, get a conference reservation form and return it to Mrs. Drake by November 22nd with your first $50 payment. We will meet November 9th to begin discussing competitions.
