2.3: Games: Safe Practice Unit 2: Health, safety and training LS (Unit 2) Health, safety and training 2.3: Games: Safe Practice ?

Learning Objectives By the end of this lesson students should: Describe the importance of taking part in Physical Education within an environment that is safe and secure. Although all teachers have this responsibility to their students, students should also be aware of risks and check that the environment, facilities and equipment are safe to use. Students should understand the terms “risk” and “hazard” and the relationship between them. Describe the safety arrangements, potential dangers, rules and regulations for at least one activity within each category of activities, of whether the activities are taught as part of the GCSE course or not. Assessment: A*-C Grade = more in-depth answers and extension work D-G Grade = answer most questions at foundation level LS (Unit 2) Health, safety and training 2.3: Games: Safe Practice

Starter: to prepare for a physical education you need to do what? LS (Unit 2) Health, safety and training 2.3: Games: Safe Practice

Preparing for a PE Lesson Jewellery off Hair Tied Up Medication ready (i.e. Inhaler) No chewing gum Correct Clothing Equipment Water (hydrate) Warm Up Safety Requirements Code of Behaviour LS (Unit 2) Health, safety and training 2.3: Games: Safe Practice

Task 1: Name that word Divide into twos One student must have their back to the whiteboard Describe the word in red. If you are struggling, use the description to help. Write it down on the paper Once your partner has the word, change over LS (Unit 2) Health, safety and training 2.3: Games: Safe Practice

Warm Up/Cool Down One of the main reasons to do is for muscles gradually helps to prevent injury At the end of the activity helps prevent injury, but also to disperse lactic acid, preventing soreness and aches This not only reduces the risk of injury, but also has mental benefits by preparing the person for physical activity. LS (Unit 2) Health, safety and training 2.3: Games: Safe Practice ?

Checking Equipment & Facilities Organisers, officials and participants need to check for safety before a competition Organisers have to check that facilities have to be safe and secure, and that equipment is in good condition Specific checks for specific sports must be carried out concerning the field of play, facilities and participants LS (Unit 2) Health, safety and training 2.3: Games: Safe Practice ?

Protective Equipment & Clothing Many sports and activities require the wearing of certain things. In some sports you cannot play unless you have them. Wearing this varies depending on the position you play in a certain sport, for example in hockey and cricket It is also important not to wear clothing or other items which might cause injury to an opponent or team mate. LS (Unit 2) Health, safety and training 2.3: Games: Safe Practice

Footwear Apart from helping performance, it is always safer Footballers wear boots for grip, sprinters wear running spikes for speed and triple jumpers wear specific shoes for protection Runners need special footwear not only for comfort and protection, but also to prevent injury LS (Unit 2) Health, safety and training 2.3: Games: Safe Practice

Rules There are a number of reasons why players should play by this: Reduces risk to yourself and others. It reduces risk to themselves and others. It stops the players being penalised. Giving away points, free shots, getting sent off or disqualified for breaking the rules does not help the player or the team. The sport cannot happen unless players cooperate with the opposition whilst competing LS (Unit 2) Health, safety and training 2.3: Games: Safe Practice

Environment Conditions In hotter weather, dehydration is an issue. Working in winter will change the way a training session is conducted. Considerations must also be taken into account, as working surfaces may become wet and icy, making them slippery to train. LS (Unit 2) Health, safety and training 2.3: Games: Safe Practice

Task 2: Outline the Safety Working in teams you must come up with some potential dangers and rules and regulations that keeps participant's safe whilst taking part in the activity. You must do this for one activity/game from each of the seven categories of activities. LS (Unit 2) Health, safety and training 2.3: Games: Safe Practice

Risk Hazard Task 3: Risk and Hazards Which is a Hazard and which is a Risk? Risk _________________expose (someone or something valued) to danger, harm, or loss __________________Is something which could be danger to you Hazard LS (Unit 2) Health, safety and training 2.3: Games: Safe Practice

Task 4: Find the hazards There are 12 potential hazards LS (Unit 2) Health, safety and training 2.3: Games: Safe Practice

LS (Unit 2) Health, safety and training 2.3: Games: Safe Practice

Task 5: Potential Hazards Working in your teams you will visit the following areas: Outdoor Pool Gym Dance Studio Squash Courts Futsal Pitch Tennis Courts Athletics Track Basketball Court 1. You need to write down potential hazards 2. Rate each facility Red for dangerous Amber for caution Green for perfectly safe for use. LS (Unit 2) Health, safety and training 2.3: Games: Safe Practice
