Scientific Method Note Chart Please be sure to put your name on it 

1. State the problem or question -make sure it is realistic and that you can gather the necessary resources -when possible, choose a topic that really interests you -your question should include both an independent and dependent variable -safety first! *we are going to watch part of a BRAIN POP clip…listen for the question they are asking and write it in the appropriate place

2. Form a testable hypothesis -use prior knowledge to help form your hypothesis -answer to your question/problem -it’s okay if your hypothesis ends up being wrong -include a statement that shows cause and effect (If _____, then ______) -it should address the independent and dependent variables *we are going to watch part of a BRAIN POP clip…listen for the hypothesis they come up with and write it in the appropriate place

3. Design an experiment -decide on your constants (controls) and variables -decide on how you will measure and keep it consistent -list all steps in order -the independent variable is what you purposely change -the dependent variable is what changes because of the independent variable (measurement) *we are going to watch part of a BRAIN POP clip…listen to how the set up their experiment and write it in the appropriate place

4. Collect and analyze data -stay consistent during your experiment -organize data in a table/chart -use your data to create a graph for your conclusion See assignment #2 for graphing *we are going to watch part of a BRAIN POP clip…listen for the data they collect write it in the appropriate place

5. Draw conclusions -restate the problem and hypothesis -summarize what you did -explain your data (graph) -was your hypothesis right or wrong -what future experiment might you do *we are going to watch part of a BRAIN POP clip…listen for the conclusion they draw and write it in the appropriate place

6. Communicate results -journals -class reports -news reports -magazines -doctor reports -others… *we are going to watch part of a BRAIN POP clip…how does communicating results help develop theories? Write your answer in the appropriate spot.

Your Turn You will get into groups of 2-3 people. Your group will choose a paper airplane design. Your design will be used to build 3 different size planes. You will be testing which size of the airplane flies farthest. Sit with who you are going work with now.

1. State the problem or question The question being asked is…

2. Form a testable hypothesis If ….then, …. *This make take some time. Feel free to do a little paper airplane research on your own.

3. Design an experiment To test our hypothesis, we will… Sketch your airplane design in the box.

Once you have your design (no scissors, tape)… Come see me for one sheet of each: large, medium, small Fold each plane the EXACT same way Attach the provided paper clip to each plane how Mr. Browning showed you Put your names on all 3 planes See Mr. Browning when your planes are ready for flight

Steps to assembling your plane for launch! Unfold the paper clips like so…(3 total-1 for each plane)

Steps to assembling your plane for launch! Same plane, just both sides showing

How to measure the distance your plane flies… Line up launcher on tile line After launching, count the number of tiles your plane flew over. If your plane lands halfway between two tiles, don’t count that tile

Today 9/7 Launch your planes and record the data in the chart on your paper. Find the average distance of each plane. See me if you need help or a calculator (yes, you may use your phone’s calculator). Finish the rest of your paper, including the graph. On a separate piece of paper, write a paragraph to conclude your experiment. Use the front of your worksheet (box #5) to ensure you include everything. Staple your paragraph to the back of the worksheet and turn in. You will have today and tomorrow to complete this. It is due at the end of class tomorrow. See Mr. Browning for your next assignment, due Thursday at the beginning of class.
