IEEE Foundation Volunteers In Philanthropy IEEE Development Office Karen Nowicki, VIP Coordinator Kristina Collmann, Director of Development Thank you for a few moments to talk about the VIP program. IEEE Foundation Since 1973, the IEEE Foundation has served as the philanthropic arm of the IEEE. The Foundation provides approximately $1 Million a year in grants primarily to IEEE related programs in the areas of Awards, Education, and History. In addition to these three areas, the IEEE Foundation actively seeks out opportunities to support special initiatives that will significantly advance the profession and help us meet our broader societal responsibilities.

IEEE Foundation Areas of Support Awards By supporting the recognition of engineering achievements, the IEEE Foundation encourages excellence in engineering at the highest level and promotes public awareness of the long-reaching effects of the work of engineers.

IEEE Foundation Areas of Support Education The IEEE Foundation strives to spark an interest, love, and life-long appreciation of mathematics, science, and technology in students and works to keep the engineer on the leading edge of new technology.

IEEE Foundation Areas of Support History By preserving, researching, and promoting the history of electrical and information technology, the IEEE Foundation seeks to help society know the past, understand the present, and improve the future, as well as to foster an appreciation of the impact of engineers on everyday life.

IEEE Foundation Areas of Support Special Initiatives The IEEE Foundation seeks out special initiatives, in addition to Awards, Education, and History that will significantly advance the profession and help us meet our broader societal responsibilities.

IEEE and IEEE Foundation The IEEE is a 501(c)(3) technical association promoting the engineering process and applying knowledge about electro and information technologies and sciences for the benefit of humanity and the profession. The IEEE Foundation is a separately incorporated 501(c)(3) charitable organization established to support the scientific and educational purposes of IEEE.

Why do we have an IEEE Foundation? To support IEEE activities that advance technology beyond the immediate demands of the marketplace to the benefit of humanity as a whole To disperse funds to projects consistent with the mission of the IEEE, but above and beyond ongoing programs typically supported by operational funds To administer philanthropic assets To coordinate solicitations for donations and grants

Managing the IEEE Foundation The IEEE Foundation administers and has fiduciary responsibility for approximately one hundred funds. Major Funds within the Foundation include: the IEEE Foundation General Fund, IEEE Life Members Fund, Trustees of the IEEE History Center Fund, the History Fund, and many other funds supporting the IEEE Awards programs and IEEE unit activities consistent with the mission of the Foundation.

Managing the IEEE Foundation Typically the IEEE Foundation administers charitable funds and IEEE units handle program administration. An annual investment fee of approximately 1% of the annual balance of the Fund is charged to each Fund.

Volunteers In Philanthropy Vision The vision of the Volunteers in Philanthropy program is to encourage IEEE members and friends to focus their philanthropic efforts on accomplishing the charitable goals of the IEEE Foundation and the IEEE.

Volunteers In Philanthropy Mission The mission of VIP is to support and train volunteers to participate in developing a regionally based initiative focused on building long-term relationships between the organization, the VIPs, and prospective donors.

Volunteers In Philanthropy Goals Encourage growth of a philanthropic culture based on the mission of the IEEE Foundation including local interests and charitable goals Raise awareness of philanthropy by increasing volunteer involvement Identify new donor prospects Educate prospects about philanthropic opportunities for partnership Engage donor’s interests and needs

Increasing Philanthropic Efforts: Building Relationships Invite and engage donor attention Inform and educate donor about the mission, programs, and needs for funding Identify donor interests and apply those interests to the mission Involve donor in meaningful ways Encourage donor to invest his/her time and/or money Inspire donor to create a profound experience or connection to the mission

VIP Responsibilities Education and Promotion Prospect Research Educate and promote programs through IEEE and IEEE Foundation publications and presentations at meetings and conferences Prospect Research Identify and qualify prospective donors Cultivation of Prospects & Current Donors Engage and build relationships with donors through a variety of outreach programs

Membership Has Its Privileges Access to VIP Resource Manual Receive support from staff Receive assistance in volunteer/prospect recruiting efforts Learn tips on cultivating prospects & current donors Discover information about potential prospects Receive guidance on proper fundraising procedures Learn about new philanthropic opportunities Network with IEEE Philanthropists

VIP Coordinator: Your IEEE Staff Point Person The VIP Coordinator will energize, encourage, support, and educate VIPs to acquire, cultivate, and solidify long-term relationships with current donors and prospects.

Region 3 Pilot Program The IEEE Foundation Development Committee identified Region 3 as the best IEEE Region to conduct a pilot for the VIP Program

Region 3 Pilot Program The IEEE Foundation requests approval from the IEEE Region 3 Executive Committee to conduct the 2003 VIP Pilot Program in Region 3.
