Meeting the Standards for Every Student Dolores Davison, ASCCC Secretary Fabiola Torres, ASCCC Accreditation Committee

Student Services in Distance Education ACCJC policy specifies that “all learning opportunities provided by accredited institutions must have equivalent quality, accountability, and focus on student outcomes, regardless of mode of delivery.” (ACCJC DE Policies page 46)

Effective Practices for DE Student Services Stay Consistent in Expectations The catalog must contain policies such at student exceptions for distance education.  Regular and effective contact must be made clear by describing what attendance and participation mean in an online environment. Faculty must provide clear expectations. Show Evidence of Access to Services The campus catalog, website and DE faculty must provide information of remote student services such as counseling, tutoring and library services. Get Students Ready The campus and courses should demonstrate the effort to encourage first-time DE students to succeed in an online learning environment.

You Don’t Have to Do This Alone! The Online Education Initiative (OEI) has long recognized that increasing student success involves many aspects of student support beyond that which can be provided directly by the classroom instructor

Resources That Are Available for DE Counseling Cranium Cafe - Online Counseling Platform The California Community Colleges Online Counseling Network (CCC-OCN) - Online Counseling Network Readiness A series of engaging, interactive multimedia tutorials and resources a Creative Commons licensing and which may be repurposed to meet the unique needs of an individual college.

Tutoring Resources Online Tutors and Tutoring Platforms: NetTutor provides online, on-demand services to meet with live online tutors, submit questions, and review essays PLUS free system-wide license for use and training of NetTutor WorldWideWhiteboard platform, making it easy for students, faculty, and staff to collaborate and tutor online.

Library Resources In collaboration with the California Community Colleges Council of Chief Librarians and representatives from the ASCCC, an OEI Steering Committee work group developed guidelines and effective practices for California Community Colleges to integrate library resources into the Canvas CCMS.

Be Certain That You Have the Plan Contact Student Services to find out Online Counseling plan Contact Learning Center regarding Online Tutoring plan Introduce faculty to the FREE Readiness online modules. Go to http://ccconlineed.org>Student Services Resource > Readiness Keep a close relationship with your library AND provide students the link to the library. Refer to OEI's constant development in Student Services.

What About Other Students? Resources must be available for students at all campuses and centers These resources include all of the above and health services A major exception: dual enrollment sites (high schools) are not required to provide equivalent services Having said that, it is not a bad idea to provide at least some of the above listed services (ie, library access) to these students
