Catholic Radio Association Gallagher Charitable Insurance Services

The Beginning of a Partnership Gallagher Charitable, in collaboration with the Catholic Radio Association, has endeavored to develop and provide a comprehensive method for procurement and utilization of insurance products. The primary goal of this program is to ensure that the radio stations and operators are properly insured to carry out the mission in the most cost effective manner. The Beginning of a Partnership

Auto (Liability and Comprehensive) If vehicles are purchased and used for the operation, they should be covered on an “auto policy.” However, if “only” personal vehicles are used for errands, hired non-owned insurance should be added to the General Liability program. If you have vehicles that have been modified for specified use these should be discussed to ensure appropriate coverage. These vehicles may be used for remote broadcast etc. It is important to decide if comprehensive coverage is indicated. For example, if a vehicle is new and does not have a clear title, comprehensive coverage would be required by the lender. If the vehicle is wholly owned, is it worth the cost to control potential loss?

General Liability This coverage provides premises protection and liability from personal injury etc. The General Legality coverage does not cover professional liability like media/broadcasters. This is specialized coverage in addition to the General Liability.

Media and/or Broadcasters Liability Media/Broadcasters Coverage primarily protects an organization against; slander, defamation of character and invasion of privacy. Most of the news would be provided through a “wire service” but at times, a station may host someone like a financial planner who could give “bad advice.” If a claim results in this realm the defense cost could be steep and therefore coverage may be essential. Additionally, the town or other entities may require that you purchase this type of coverage and name them as an “additional insured” on the policy.

Property Coverage It is critical to understand what coverage is needed for the property. For example, if you are leasing a space who is covering the property coverage on the building? If your entity is responsible for purchasing the coverage it should be listed in the contract. Additionally, the contents must be insured with a clear understanding of the value. Keep in mind that insurance “replacement cost” is different from a real estate appraisal. When purchasing property insurance it is critical to understand the cost to “re-build.” Additionally, you may have to upgrade the building to meet current codes, which will add more cost. Ordinance and Law provides additional monies when the building must be upgraded. Otherwise this expense may not be covered.

Workers Compensation Each state has guidelines as to when it is required to purchase Workers Compensation coverage. For example, in South Carolina if you have 4 or more employees it is dictated that you have coverage. However, even if you do not have the number of employees which triggers coverage the organization is still responsible. Therefore, it is recommended that coverage is secured. Additionally, many medical programs will not respond if an injury occurs at work. There are several activities that represent a higher Workers Compensation exposure for radio stations. Please see below: Do employees carry out tower maintenance? Are employees traveling frequently for offsite activities?

Crime Coverage Crime within a radio station is generally a “slight exposure” but can occur. It is important to review what a “target” would be if a crime occurred. The broadcasting equipment and music could be a target for an employee theft. Additionally, the donations could be embezzled. It is important to consider the exposure and purchase appropriate coverages.

Business Interruption Coverage This coverage can replace lost donations while off the air if a covered loss occurs. However, if there were a plan to continue operations at another location the exposure would be limited. Extra expenses may be incurred to get into a location in close proximity and this coverage is available to limit the loss.

Inland Marine – Radio & Television Towers and Equipment This is insurance for the protection of radio and television stations and cellular service providers, including towers, transmitting equipment and other property. It is essential to determine what type of coverage is not included in the premises section and supplement as needed. Radio towers must be evaluated separately to ensure adequate coverage. They also require regular maintenance for insurance to apply.

Employment Practices Liability This covers businesses against claims by workers over wrongful termination, sexual harassment, discrimination, invasion of privacy, false imprisonment, breach of contract, emotional distress, and wage and hour law violations.
