Indirect Statement A verb of thinking, saying, knowing, believing, feeling and many others describing some mental action is called indirect statement. The indirect statements retell (indirectly) someone else’s words. Head Verbs (Mental action): Think, see, say, and hear

Direct Statement Vs. Indirect Statement. Direct Statement: The girl is beautiful. You are studying. Indirect Statement: retell (indirectly) someone else’s words. He says that the girl is beautiful. I think that you are studying. N.B: It is introduced by the Head verb clauses. Head Verb: Think, say, see, and hear

Direct Statement Direct Statement: The farmer loves the girl. English: Subject + Verb + Direct object Latin: Nom + Verb + Accu Agricola amat puellam.

The subject of the main verb (head verb) is nominative. Indirect Statement: The girl thinks that the farmer loves the girl. English: subject+ verb subj+verb+direct object Latin: Nom+ verb Acc+infinitive+ Acc Puella cogitat agricolam amare puellam. N.B: It is introduced by the Head verb clauses. Head Verb: Think, say, see, and hear The subject of the main verb (head verb) is nominative. The subject of the indirect statement becomes accusative and the verb becomes an infinitive.

Formula for Indirect Statement (Nom)+ verb+ accu+infinitive+accu Agricola dicit puellam portare aquam. Or Dicit puellam portare aquam. Infinitive: 2pp from the dictionary entry; ends in –re (e.g: amare, portare, narrare, docere, etc)

Practice Dicit Puellam portare aquam. Verb +Accu + Infinitive + Accu He says that the girl carries water. Dicit agricolam parare cenam. Dicit pueros portare aquam. Cogito agricolam docere Latinam. Puella putat servos narrare fabulas. Servi putant feminas curare nautas.
