AEL Alamo Consortium (ESC-20) and Alamo Colleges District Mary Helen Martinez Director of College & Career Readiness Alamo Colleges District, Academic Success Kimberly B. Vinton Coordinator AEL Alamo Consortium (ESC-20) Introduce ourselves & (MHM) – Sharing with you today our new referral process between Alamo Colleges and AEL Alamo Consortium.

Who is your model for and what does it do? (MHM)

Missing Services TSI Level Alamo Colleges District Service AEL Service DE + Support Class (Non Course Based Option NCBO) TSI 5 & 6 DE I-BEST Internal referral process ABE/ASE I-BEST How? AEL! ABE/ASE I-BEST (MHM) Explain how advisors do not have services for those students functioning in the lowest levels of TSI. Our referral model is for advisors to actually have answers for those students and for the students to have a free option for college prep. (MHM) cover columns for TSI & ACD Services available (KBV) covers AEL Services column.

What is the problem you were trying to solve for low-skilled students? (KBV)

AEL & Alamo Colleges District Referral Procedure Review TSI scores w/post assessment advisor Assess students needs TSI Levels in 1-2 scores (3- 4 levels as appropriate) in at least 2 subjects: referral to AEL Complete Universal referral form on AEL Alamo Consortium website (myfuturetx.org) Student will provide copy of TSI Scores with Levels to AEL Service Provider AEL Service Provider AEL Alamo Consortium will refer student to the appropriate service provider AEL provider contacts student within 2 business days AEL provider will upgrade basic skills & Career Navigator will provide support while receiving services Administer TABE progress test; once student reaches NRS Levels 5&6; refer student back to Alamo Colleges advisor or other post-secondary option with a return referral form Alamo Advisor keeps student referral record in Banner Alamo Advisor coordinates exams with Department Chairs: Math and/or English Math Refresher Assessment (Free of charge, no TSI) INRW Assessment (Free of charge, no TSI) Register for Alamo Colleges classes In partnership with: Alamo Colleges, Academic Success Contact: Mary Helen Martinez, M.A. Director of College & Career Readiness (KBV) Our problem solving revolved around providing an alternate pathway to Alamo Colleges other than lowest DE levels (which are too high for them to begin with), tuition based classes, or a short-term TSI cram session. As of date: 1/11/2017

What was our tipping point for success? (MHM)

District and Consortium Shifts Alamo Colleges District AEL Alamo Consortium Structural shift: Enrollment  Completion Adjustments to Managed Enrollment: students will be accepted at any time if there is available space Start with leadership: Vice Chancellor, Academic Success Vice Chancellor, Economic & Workforce Development Department Chairs Directors of Advising Leadership: Consortium members – Directors (for planning, special arrangements, communicate with all staff) Advocate on the Inside: Understands AEL Trusted by the advisors/college We’ve been waiting for this!! Benefit: Students prepared for college, not “majoring” in Developmental Educ. Benefit: Serve more students with already established college & career goals District and Consortium Shifts (MHM) Benefits across the board! Ultimate Benefit: Stronger, smarter workforce for Alamo area

How is this going to be more successful than previous procedures? (KBV)

AEL & Alamo Colleges District Referral Procedure (2) Review TSI scores w/post assessment advisor Assess students needs TSI Levels in 1-2 scores (3- 4 levels as appropriate) in at least 2 subjects: referral to AEL Complete Universal referral form on AEL Alamo Consortium website (myfuturetx.org) Student will provide copy of TSI Scores with Levels to AEL Service Provider AEL Service Provider AEL Alamo Consortium will refer student to the appropriate service provider AEL provider contacts student within 2 business days AEL provider will upgrade basic skills & Career Navigator will provide support while receiving services Administer TABE progress test; once student reaches NRS Levels 5&6; refer student back to Alamo Colleges advisor or other post-secondary option with a return referral form Alamo Advisor keeps student referral record in Banner Alamo Advisor coordinates exams with Department Chairs: Math and/or English Math Refresher Assessment (Free of charge, no TSI) INRW Assessment (Free of charge, no TSI) Register for Alamo Colleges classes In partnership with: Alamo Colleges, Academic Success Contact: Mary Helen Martinez, M.A. Director of College & Career Readiness No charge (KBV) The key benefits to the students in this referral procedure: Free AEL to upgrade basic skills Career Navigator support (aren’t floating in AEL all alone) Bypass TSI, save money on retests As of date: 1/11/2017
