Vocab L28 Across the way: Prefix trans-

Trans- It is used to form adjectives which indicate that something involves or enables travel from one side of an area to the other. Trans- means “across” or “go across.” Sometimes, it also means “movement” or “change.”

transaction (n.) A transaction is a piece of business, for example an act of buying or selling something. He resigned rather than take part in such a dishonest transaction.

transition (n.) Transition is the process in which something changes from one state to another.  Adolescence is the period of transition between childhood and adulthood.

transfusion (n.) A transfusion is the transfer of something, such as blood, from one person or thing into another. She soon came to her senses after a blood transfusion.

transport (v.) To transport people or goods somewhere is to take them from one place to another in a vehicle. They use tankers to transport the oil to Los Angeles.

transform (verb.) Water can transform a desert into a garden. To transform something or someone means to change its form or appearance completely and suddenly. Water can transform a desert into a  garden.

translate (v.) I can read Spanish but can't translate it into English. To take something from one language and express it in another. I can read Spanish but can't translate it into English.

transplant (v.) If doctors transplant an organ such as a heart or a kidney, they use it to replace a patient's diseased organ. The operation to transplant a kidney is now fairly routine.

transcontinental (adj.) A transcontinental journey or route goes from one side of a continent to the other. The transcontinental railway goes from New York to San Francisco.

transitory (adj.) Most teenage romances are transitory. If you say that something is transitory, you mean that it lasts only for a short time.  Most teenage romances are transitory.

transpose (V.) If you transpose something from one place or situation to another, you move it there. I must have accidentally transposed the numbers when I dialed his phone number.
