Course Selection Process for 2017-2018 Prepare for the Next year!

Course Selection Day–Tuesday, 02/07/17 During 1st period, every student will receive a Course Selection: Student Information Sheet. At the beginning of each of class, your teacher will discuss which course would best suit you for the following year in that department. Record it on your form. For next year, students will need to decide what level of the course to take : level, Pre AP, AP, Dual. Take the form to all your classes on Tuesday and record which class you would like to take next year for English, Math, Science, Social Studies, LOTE, Fine Arts, Athletics, CTE, and other electives.

At the end of the day Take a picture on your phone of your form. (Just in case you misplace it) Using the form: Compare your course selection form to your Bridges plan Write in changes on Bridges plan if necessary

Students will work on Course plan w/ Counselor on February 8-23 Feb. 8 & 9- Students in Math Models, Alg 2, Pre Cal, AP Stats, and AP Calculus, College Algebra, Algebra 3 Feb. 15 & 16- Students in Geometry and Alg 2 Pre AP Feb. 22 & 23- Students in Algebra 1, Algebra 1 Pre AP, Geometry Pre AP Come prepared to select next year’s courses with your Counselor 2 alternate courses (required) Dual Credit Correspondence course Need to make an endorsement change?

New Courses for Next School Year AP Capstone Focuses on the core academic skills needed for college, career and life readiness. This course will give students additional skills to use in other AP classes and will also instruct students in how to complete college-level work. 2 year program with commitment to continue for both years 1st year – only juniors Students who are self-motivated, inquisitive, collaborative and exploratory Students who are interested in exploring issues of interest to them while developing the analytic, research, problem-solving and communication skills that are critical to success in college. Year 1 – Team Project & Presentation, Individual Research-Based Essay & Presentation, End of Course Exam

New Courses for Next school year High School Fire Science Academy 25 Students per cohort with opportunity to complete the Lone Star College Basic Structural Firefighter Certificate Level while in high school and be prepared to sit for the state exam. The academy is completed during the junior and senior years of high school. Students complete the academy on the LSC-Kingwood Campus and at the LSC-K sanctioned fire training facilities (must provide transportation) Courses count for both high school and college credit. Academy during Junior year: Mon-Fri 1:00 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. (Plus 4 Saturdays) Senior year: Mon-Fri 8:00 a.m. -10:30 a.m. (Plus 4 Saturdays) EMT Program NOT INCLUDED in academy – needs to be completed during summer before or after senior year (when student has reached 18 years of age). Student and/or ISD will cover the following costs: Course fees, Books, Physical Exam, Drug testing, Background check, Uniforms and running shoes, Rental of bunker gear during senior year.

New Courses for Next school year Professional Communications (.5): 9-12 Grade Students will be expected to develop and expand the ability to write, read, edit, speak, listen, apply software applications, manipulate computer graphics and conduct internet research Will count for the following endorsements: Agriculture, Architecture, Arts A/V, Business Mgt., Education, Finance Health Science, Hospitality & Tourism, Human Services, Information Technology, Law, Manufacturing, Marketing, STEM, Transportation  

New Courses For Next School Year Statistical Reasoning – After Alg. 2 Topics include: probability & simulation, analyzing data, statistical design and inferences and linear regression and correlation problems. Students may earn Lone Star Credit for Math 1342 Principles of Applied Engineering (1.0)– 9 & 10 Entry level class Introduces the practice of engineering, uses computers and 2D and 3D design Criminal Investigation (1.0)- 10-12 Grade Introduces students to the profession of criminal investigations Crime scene processing, evidence collection, fingerprinting and courtroom presentation

New courses for next school year Advertising (.5): 9-12 Grade Overview of advertising including print, broadcast, and digital media Social Media Marketing (.5):9-12 Grade Investigate how marketing community measures success in world of social media Professional Standards of Agribusiness (.5): 10-12 Grade Focuses on leadership, communication, and problem solving as they relate to agribusiness Law Enforcement 2 (1.0):11-12 Grade Focus on ethical and legal responsibilities, patrol procedures, emergency operations, and courtroom testimony Completion of Law Enforcement 1 recommended

Course changes for next school year Additional courses have changed names. Your counselor will assist you in choosing the correct courses.

Dual Credit Dual Credit Enrollment Request Forms are due February 24 in office 1023. All Lone Star requirements and paperwork must be completed by April 21 or the dual credit class will be dropped from the course requests. Dual credit grades are recorded on your college transcript! Choose your courses carefully!

Correspondence courses Counts toward your GPA. Correspondence course must be in your course plan in bridges if it is required for graduation.
