Career Sustainability Survey of KL2 Programs: Preliminary Results Christine A. Sorkness, PharmD University of Wisconsin-Madison CTSA Jason G. Umans, MD, PhD Georgetown-Howard CTSA on behalf of the CTSA Workforce Development Domain Task Force Lead Team and Working Group

Introduction Success of a sustainable and diversified biomedical workforce depends on retention of talented academic researchers, mentoring them to independence Need to identify key CTSA KL2 program elements that contribute to success, and share best practices Goals: 100% survey response rate (88.5% to date) Share data for individual vs CTSA-wide benchmarks Disseminate results

Largest gap between those who applied and were awarded Largest gap between those who are eligible and those who have applied

Other PhD/DDS PhD/PharmD PharmD only

39 out of 54 institutions (72%) indicate they have other parallel or extramurally-funded KL2-equivalent career development programs

Other Opportunities Include: Career development Ethics/RCR GCP Community Engagement Cultural Competency Health Disparities Mentee Training Degree/Certificate programs Project Management Research Administration Communication

Other Contributions Include: Serving on K or T review panels Reviewing grant applications Participating in sessions for current scholars Serving on KL2 Advisory Group Teaching courses

Minimum # Institutions 1 5 2 22 3 25 >3 Current Minimum Size of KL2 Mentor Team Minimum # Institutions 1 5 2 22 3 25 >3 Number of institutions reporting that KL2 mentors are required to take mentor training: 14 (26%) Minimum number of required mentor training hours: Range: 2-16 hours; Median: 5 hours Number of institutions reporting that faculty are compensated in some way to mentor KL2 scholars: 6 (11%)

Other Data Analyses to Come… Additional program / scholar characteristics: Primary appointments of scholars at start of KL2 program Prior training of scholars at start of KL2 Program Gender and URM status of applicants and awardees Sustainability outcomes: Career trajectory of graduates Percent of translational research effort of graduates Extramural funding support of awardees during and after KL2 support and role on those grants More granular analyses: Maturity and size of CTSA program Outcome data by scholar demographics

Next Steps Breakout session today: Please provide your feedback Work toward 100% survey response rate Complete the data analysis Provide data to KL2 program directors to benchmark individual program metrics with CTSA-wide metrics Prepare manuscript outlining full survey results and analysis Recommendations for CTSA-wide data collection Comparable survey for pre- and post-doc CTSA TL1 programs
