Specsavers – Retailer of the Year Congratulations! Specsavers – Retailer of the Year

Bristol Rough Sleeping Partnership and Bristol Street Aware

History We set up a Rough Sleeping Partnership in summer 2015 to reduce and prevent homelessness. Why? It’s a partnership set up by Bristol City Council and led by St Mungo’s and also includes Avon and Somerset Police and faith groups, and other agencies to address the problem of street homelessness in the city In November 2015 the official estimate of people sleeping rough on the night of the annual street count was 97 This is an increase from 41 people (on any one night) in 2014 and less than 10 in 2012 (on any one night). 5

Night shelter

How we have helped so far The partnership has made 48 bed spaces available for people since Christmas: One assessment night centre (20 bed spaces) One night shelter for people with lower support needs waiting for supported housing (15 bed spaces) Three property guardianship projects (13 bed spaces) using empty Bristol City Council (BCC) properties We are in the early stages of securing two more property guardianship projects (also BCC properties). 7

The morning after

Bristol Street Aware The partnership is engaging with businesses in the city. We want you to sign up to help the people who are sleeping rough and work with the wider community to tackle the impact of negative street activities. Training available from St Mungo’s for your staff could include: reducing the ‘fear factor’ of approaching rough sleepers understanding why people end up sleeping rough connecting people with support understanding challenging behaviour strategies for managing challenging behaviour sleeping in bins: awareness of the risks and how to reduce occurrences awareness of fundraising standards around street collections.

Connecting people with support

Your commitment In return you agree with the Bristol Street Aware key principles: No one should have to sleep on the streets Rough sleeping and undesirable street activity (begging, street drinking, antisocial behaviour) are separate issues Businesses are decent corporate citizens that take action: Caring about vulnerable people and taking action to connect them with support Caring about customers and the local community and taking action to reduce undesirable street activity and improve the street environment You will offer to connect people sleeping rough with support via

Early morning outreach

Your commitment Tackling undesirable street activity The business does not accept begging, street drinking and anti-social behaviour It is committed to logging any begging, street drinking or anti-social behaviour with the Police via www.avonandsomerset.police.uk (Contact Us section) or via 101– or in an emergency seeking help via 999 or the shop radio network It is aware of the ability to log pure ASB non-Police matter incidents with the Council via www.bristol.gov.uk/asb.

Volunteering & fundraising   The Rough Sleeping Partnership Shelter Programme currently provides somewhere safe and supportive to stay for up to 40 homeless men and women in our Bristol night shelters. We need volunteering and fundraising activity to support this work. Please do contact us on regional.sw@mungos.org to discuss ways that you can involved and help people achieve a more stable life away from the streets.
