Sermon Emojis from the Psalms Songs of the Messiah

Be young, be foolish, but________________ ”It can’t be wrong, if it ___________ “It’s a hammer of justice, it’s a bell of freedom, it’s a song ___________

“Over there, over there, send the word, send the word __________ “To everything ___________

A psalm that we cannot utter as a prayer, that makes us falter and horrifies us, is a hint to us that here someone else is praying, not we; that the One who is here protesting his innocence, who is invoking God’s judgment, who has come to such infinite depths of suffering, is none other than Jesus Christ Himself.

He it is who is praying here, and not only here, but in the whole Psalter. - D. Bonhoeffer

Psalms about the Messiah These “royal psalms” envision a king so glorious in his might and so universal in his reign they simply must be prophetic.

21:4] He asked you for life, and you gave it to him-length of days, for ever and ever. 45:2,6 ] You are the most excellent of men and your lips have been anointed with grace, since God has blessed you forever. [6] Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever; a scepter of justice will be the scepter of your kingdom.

[11] All kings will bow down to him and all nations will serve him. 72:8, 11,12,17 [8] He will rule from sea to sea and from the River to the ends of the earth. [11] All kings will bow down to him and all nations will serve him. [12] For he will deliver the needy who cry out, the afflicted who have no one to help.

[72:17] May his name endure forever; may it continue as long as the sun. All nations will be blessed through him, and they will call him blessed. It speaks of the reign of a man who is more than a man

Acts 2…God has raised this Jesus to life, and we are all witnesses of the fact. 33 Exalted to the right hand of God, he has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit and has poured out what you now see and hear. 34 For David did not ascend to heaven, and yet he said,

" `The Lord said to my Lord: "Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet.’" "Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ.“ Acts 2

Psalms by the Messiah The exaltation of Christ as well as his suffering finds expression in the Psalms [16:10] because you will not abandon me to the grave, nor will you let your Holy One see decay.

NEW MEANINGS FOR US We come to appreciate the true humanity of Christ more fully. When we turn to the psalms and read them as Christ’s very word, his humanity suddenly comes to life for us.

We have a new insight into what it means for him to suffer and be tempted as we are. We have a better understanding of what it meant for him to take on the yoke of our flesh in order to redeem us.

Jesus understands human suffering Jesus understands human suffering. Jesus knew the wounds of betrayal and desertion. Jesus knew the fear and loneliness that drives us in desperation to God for help.

Jesus knew the temptation to doubt God’s love during the face of great suffering. Jesus knew physical death and suffering.

As one who was ‘made sin for us’ even the sinner’s cry in the Psalms becomes his own.

Use the Psalms to express the cry of your soul to God. We can find comfort in reading the Psalms as the words of our Mediator and Savior.
