The Psalms: A Very Brief Introduction Like the Book of the Law, the one Book of the Psalms is comprised of five books (1–41; 42–72; 73–89; 90–106; 107–150).

The Psalms: A Very Brief Introduction Each individual psalm is intentionally arranged” to “encourage us to view them as pointing to the Messiah” (Sailhamer, 36).

The Psalms: A Very Brief Introduction “Psalms” means songs. The Hebrew title for the book is telehim which means praises. So, the Psalms are poetic songs of praise. 1/3 of the Old Testament is poetry.

The Psalms: A Very Brief Introduction The emotive force of poetry takes us from what we should know about a subject to how we should feel about it. We are drawn into the poet’s experience and gain wisdom and perspective by looking at life through another’s words (Chip McDaniel).

Psalm 1 (ESV) Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers;

Sermon in a Sentence To enjoy God’s blessing: 1) we must live the life of the man who is blessed; 2) we must understand there are only two paths any human can take, and 3) we must ask the questions this Psalm raises.

blessed is the man = “the happiness of the man!” How Blessed is the Man! blessed is the man = “the happiness of the man!”

In verse 1, the Psalmist tells us what the blessed man never does. How Blessed is the Man! In verse 1, the Psalmist tells us what the blessed man never does.

How Blessed is the Man! never walked and will not walk in the counsel of the wicked. never stood and will not stand in the way of sinners. never sat and will not sit in the seat or the assembly of scoffers.

How Blessed is the Man! Sin moves from: what we think to what we do to who we are.

How Blessed is the Man! The man is not blessed only because of what he does not do but especially because of what he does do.

How Blessed is the Man! He delights (2) in – the law, the instruction, of Yahweh, the Scriptures. delight means to “feel great favor toward something” (Harris).

How Blessed is the Man! This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success - Josh 1:8

How Blessed is the Man! The basic sense of the word meditates is a groan or a low hum. Everything the blessed man says and does is informed by the constant hum of God’s Word that fills his mind and heart.

How Blessed is the Man! “Whatever really shapes a man’s thinking shapes his life” (Kidner, 64).

How Blessed is the Man! His life is so aligned with God’s agenda that, even if he appears to be failing… just wait, He will bring forth fruit in the proper time; he always succeeds in whatever he does.

How Blessed is the Man! 2. We must understand there are only two paths any human can take (4–6).

How Blessed is the Man! This psalm does not leave us with the option of a mushy middle of muddled allegiances.

How Blessed is the Man! “Both passages illustrate a totality of experience in which one is immersed, focused, and committed to a culture of association that dominates and shapes a worldview” (Wilson, 94).

How Blessed is the Man! Verse 4 begins, literally, “Not so the wicked!” Everything we just read of the blessed man, the wicked are the opposite.

How Blessed is the Man! Verse 6 gives us only two paths. There is the way of the righteous and the way of the wicked (6).

How Blessed is the Man! Wicked is repeated 3x in vv 4–6 for emphasis. The word refers to one who commits crimes deserving of punishment.

How Blessed is the Man! We can be righteous not by what we have done but by the perfect life Jesus lived and the life He gives. Only Jesus perfectly fulfills Psalm 1:1–3, and He offers us the opportunity to have a full share in His righteousness by sharing in His blessing. It’s a gift!

How Blessed is the Man! Jesus says, My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand (John 10:27–28).
