Praise to the Lord the Almighty The King of creation O my soul praise Him For He is thy health and salvation All ye who hear now To His temple draw near Join me in glad adoration
So wondrously reigneth Shelters thee under His wings Praise to the Lord Who o’er all things So wondrously reigneth Shelters thee under His wings Yes so gently sustaineth Hast thou not seen How all thy longings have been Granted in what He ordaineth
Thy work and defend thee Surely His goodness and mercy Praise to the Lord Who doth prosper Thy work and defend thee Surely His goodness and mercy Here daily attend thee Ponder anew what The Almighty can do If with His love He befriend thee
Praise the Lord
Praise to the Lord O let all that is in me adore Him All that hath life and breath Come now with praises before Him Let the amen Sound from His people again Gladly forever we adore him
The Solid Rock
My hope is built on nothing less Than Jesus' blood and righteousness I dare not trust the sweetest frame But wholly lean on Jesus' name
On Christ the solid Rock I stand All other ground is sinking sand
When darkness seems to hide His face I rest on His unchanging grace In every high and stormy gale My anchor holds within the veil
On Christ the solid Rock I stand All other ground is sinking sand
His oath His covenant his blood Support me in the whelming flood When all around my soul gives way He then is all my Hope and Stay
On Christ the solid Rock I stand All other ground is sinking sand
When He shall come with trumpet sound O may I then in Him be found Dressed in His righteousness alone Faultless to stand before the throne
On Christ the solid Rock I stand All other ground is sinking sand

My Soul Longs For the Lord Sanctuary Choir
My soul longs for The Lord in a weary land Wells are dry and I am empty Only dust in my hands
How I yearn for streams of mercy Where my soul can be restored ’Come and drink’ Jesus calls me ’and you will thirst no more’ Oh the fullness of Christ Word of God Word of life
Living Word you walked among us Our Emmanuel And you spoke into the darkness Broke the powers of hell
Grace and mercy flowed from Calvary To the valley of our need It is done ‘It is finished’ From every sin set free Oh the victory of Christ Word of God Word of life
How often in the stillness Have I heard your voice Every whisper every promise calls my heart to rejoice
In the quiet of the morning through the watches of the night In the fire of my struggles There’s courage for the fight Oh the power of Christ Word of God Word of life
My soul longs to walk closer with The Lord I serve More than riches more than favor I delight in Your Word
Set my heart on things above May my life tell Your goodness Turn my gaze from all that’s worthless Set my heart on things above May my life tell Your goodness Your way of truth and love Oh the wisdom of Christ Word of God word of life
My soul longs for the day I will see your face Hear Your shout of jubilation No more tears death or pain
Every word at last accomplished Heaven sings and earth replies To our God be the glory let all creation cry Praise and honor to Christ Word of God Word of life
The Psalms: A Very Brief Introduction Like the Book of the Law, the one Book of the Psalms is comprised of five books (1–41; 42–72; 73–89; 90–106; 107–150).
The Psalms: A Very Brief Introduction Each individual psalm is intentionally arranged” to “encourage us to view them as pointing to the Messiah” (Sailhamer, 36).
The Psalms: A Very Brief Introduction “Psalms” means songs. The Hebrew title for the book is telehim which means praises. So, the Psalms are poetic songs of praise. 1/3 of the Old Testament is poetry.
The Psalms: A Very Brief Introduction The emotive force of poetry takes us from what we should know about a subject to how we should feel about it. We are drawn into the poet’s experience and gain wisdom and perspective by looking at life through another’s words (Chip McDaniel).
The Psalms: A Very Brief Introduction We must never forget these are also divine words, given under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit.
The Psalms: A Very Brief Introduction The Spirit of the LORD speaks by me; His word is on my tongue. David in 2 Sam 23:2
The Psalms: A Very Brief Introduction The psalms capture the reality of human emotion in relation to divine matters – God’s anointed Son and King, His Kingdom, and the various experiences and sure hope of those who seek the coming King.
The Psalms: A Very Brief Introduction Everything written about me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled. Jesus in Luke 24:44
Psalm 1 (ESV) Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers;
Psalm 1 (ESV) 2 but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night.
Psalm 1 (ESV) 3 He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers.
Psalm 1 (ESV) 4 The wicked are not so, but are like chaff that the wind drives away. 5 Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous;
Psalm 1 (ESV) 6 for the Lord knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.
Sermon in a Sentence To enjoy God’s blessing: 1) we must live the life of the man who is blessed; 2) we must understand there are only two paths any human can take, and 3) we must ask the questions this Psalm raises.
1. We must live the life of the man who is blessed (1–3). How Blessed is the Man! 1. We must live the life of the man who is blessed (1–3).
blessed is the man = “the happiness of the man!” How Blessed is the Man! blessed is the man = “the happiness of the man!”
In verse 1, the Psalmist tells us what the blessed man never does. How Blessed is the Man! In verse 1, the Psalmist tells us what the blessed man never does.
How Blessed is the Man! never walked and will not walk in the counsel of the wicked. never stood and will not stand in the way of sinners. never sat and will not sit in the seat or the assembly of scoffers.
How Blessed is the Man! Notice that sin progresses from the counsel of the wicked to the way of sinners to the seat of scoffers.
Counsel means our thoughts and plans. How Blessed is the Man! Counsel means our thoughts and plans.
How Blessed is the Man! “Woe to those who deeply hide their counsel from the Lord, And whose deeds are done in a dark place, And they say, “Who sees us?” or “Who knows us?” Isaiah 29:15
Way means the general course of one’s life. How Blessed is the Man! Way means the general course of one’s life.
Seat means a company of people and refers to our sense of belonging. How Blessed is the Man! Seat means a company of people and refers to our sense of belonging.
How Blessed is the Man! Sin moves from: what we think to what we do to who we are.
How Blessed is the Man! The man is not blessed only because of what he does not do but especially because of what he does do.
How Blessed is the Man! He delights (2) in – the law, the instruction, of Yahweh, the Scriptures. delight means to “feel great favor toward something” (Harris).
How Blessed is the Man! This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success - Josh 1:8
How Blessed is the Man! The basic sense of the word meditates is a groan or a low hum. Everything the blessed man says and does is informed by the constant hum of God’s Word that fills his mind and heart.
How Blessed is the Man! “Whatever really shapes a man’s thinking shapes his life” (Kidner, 64).
How Blessed is the Man! His life is so aligned with God’s agenda that, even if he appears to be failing… just wait, He will bring forth fruit in the proper time; he always succeeds in whatever he does.
How Blessed is the Man! 2. We must understand there are only two paths any human can take (4–6).
How Blessed is the Man! This psalm does not leave us with the option of a mushy middle of muddled allegiances.
How Blessed is the Man! “Both passages illustrate a totality of experience in which one is immersed, focused, and committed to a culture of association that dominates and shapes a worldview” (Wilson, 94).
How Blessed is the Man! Verse 4 begins, literally, “Not so the wicked!” Everything we just read of the blessed man, the wicked are the opposite.
How Blessed is the Man! Verse 6 gives us only two paths. There is the way of the righteous and the way of the wicked (6).
How Blessed is the Man! Wicked is repeated 3x in vv 4–6 for emphasis. The word refers to one who commits crimes deserving of punishment.
How Blessed is the Man! Truly you set them in slippery places; you make them fall to ruin. How they are destroyed in a moment, swept away utterly by terrors! Psalm 73:18–19
Chaff is the ultimate in what is rootless and weightless. (Kidner, 65) How Blessed is the Man! Chaff is the ultimate in what is rootless and weightless. (Kidner, 65)
How Blessed is the Man! In verse 5, the devastating consequences of wickedness are introduced by the word therefore. As a direct result of their failure to live the life of the blessed man, the wicked have “no leg to stand on” when the Judge comes, and they will have no company with His people.
3. We must ask the questions this Psalm raises (1–6). How Blessed is the Man! 3. We must ask the questions this Psalm raises (1–6).
How Blessed is the Man! What if I don’t always delight in God’s instruction? What if not everything I do prospers? What if I have already blown it? What hope does any honest human have?
Here’s the hope; look at v. 6: God knows the way of the righteous. How Blessed is the Man! Here’s the hope; look at v. 6: God knows the way of the righteous.
How Blessed is the Man! The Lord looks down from heaven on the children of man, to see if there are any who understand, who seek after God. They have all turned aside; together they have become corrupt; there is none who does good, not even one. (Psalm 14:2–3)
How Blessed is the Man! Blessed is the one whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered. Blessed is the man against whom the Lord counts no iniquity. (Psalm 32:1–2a)
How Blessed is the Man! We can be righteous not by what we have done but by the perfect life Jesus lived and the life He gives. Only Jesus perfectly fulfills Psalm 1:1–3, and He offers us the opportunity to have a full share in His righteousness by sharing in His blessing. It’s a gift!
How Blessed is the Man! Jesus says, My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand (John 10:27–28).
How Firm a Foundation CCLI #606984
How firm a foundation Ye saints of the Lord Is laid for your faith In His excellent Word
What more can He say Than to you He hath said To you who for refuge To Jesus have fled
And will still give thee aid Fear not I am with thee O be not dismayed For I am thy God And will still give thee aid
I’ll strengthen thee help thee And cause thee to stand Upheld by my righteous Omnipotent hand
When through fiery trials My grace all sufficient Thy pathway shall lie My grace all sufficient Shall be thy supply
The flame shall not hurt thee I only design Thy dross to consume And thy gold to refine
The soul that on Jesus Hath leaned for repose I will not I will not Desert to his foes
That soul though all hell Should endeavor to shake I’ll never no never No never forsake
