SPDG Grant Initiatives

Next Call Date: February 22 Time: 2:00-3:00 EST Presenter: Neal Kingston Associate Professor Psychology and Research in Education Director Center for Educational Testing and Evaluation University of Kansas TOPIC How SEAs and IHEs can work together to tackle the challenge of helping special education teachers to connect their instruction to the common core standards.

Questions to frame our discussion:

Key Points from the Article Whole system reform 100% of the educational system State, region, district, school The right drivers = whole system reform The drivers should foster: Intrinsic motivation of students & teachers Engage students & teachers in continuous improvement of teaching and learning Inspire collective or team work Affect all teachers and students

Both strong motivation and enhanced skills on a large scale are required The drivers we want: Evidently cause whole system improvement Are measurable in practice and results A strong case can be made that strategy x produces result y

The 4 main wrong drivers The 4 right drivers Accountability Individual teacher and admin quality Technology Fragmented strategies The 4 right drivers Capacity building Groupwork Pedagogy Systemness

The right drivers Change the culture of school systems Are your initiatives… Changing the culture of schools and districts? How?

Discussion Questions 1.  Any "aha's" as a result of reading this seminar paper? 2.  What do Fullan's ideas mean for how the SPDGs might provide professional development related to the common core?
