Are you………………. Working with materials? Interested in its properties, microstructure and functions? Designing new materials to enhance its properties for applications in energy, optics, drug delivery, biosensors etc.? Designing and synthesizing molecules for bioactivity, catalytic activity etc.? Interested in synthesis and discovering new ways to form bonds? Optimizing processes for synthesis, electrodepositions, coatings, bioremediation, CO2 trapping, water and waste treatment etc.? Developing methods to analyze or detect metabolites, biomarkers, toxins, impurities, contaminants etc. in water, air, food or blood samples and others? And more…….. What can SciFinder do for you? Analyze the world’s disclosed science on a single platform: >10,000 journal titles from premier publishers e.g. ACS, Springer, Wiley, Elsevier, RSC, Taylor & Francis and more. Patents from 63 patent authorities Medline database, conference proceedings, dissertations etc. Access the authoritative CAS Registry database CAS is the organization that assigns the CAS RN Substance information like name synonyms, properties, spectra information etc. Powerful substance searching capabilities Do not be limited to searching for compounds by text only. Searching by structure and molecular formula provide greater versatility and accuracy CAS index substance information in literature so you can find that needle in the haystack CAS is a division of the American Chemical Society. Reference Searching SciFinder informs your research by providing comprehensive coverage of science disclosed in a variety of scientific disciplines (full list) All areas of biochemistry Food Chemistry Biochemical genetics Fermentation Immunochemistry Pharmacology All areas of organic chemistry  Amino acids Biomolecules Carbohydrates Organometallic compounds Steroids All areas of applied chemistry  Air pollution Ceramics Energy Waste/Water treatment Ferrous metals, alloys All areas of physical, inorganic, analytical chemistry Surface chemistry Catalysts Phase equilibrium Nuclear/Electric phenomena Electrochemistry All areas of macromolecular chemistry  Cellulose, lignin, paper Coatings, inks Dyes, organic pigments Synthetic elastomers Textiles, fibers From the information presented here, it is clear that SciFinder’s definition of chemistry is broader than “organic chemistry”. Biochemistry and its disciplines, as well as physical, inorganic and analytical chemistry make up large portion of the literature covered in SciFinder. 35% of chemistry is not published in journals; combine that with 35% of publications not being in English, SciFinder offers significant content not covered in many other databases. The literature sources, patents, journals and dissertation, curated in SciFinder are multi-lingual. Therefor it isn’t a surprise that 35% of the original sources in SciFinder are not published in English. They are curated by native language speakers who provide you with terminology access points in English to ensure you don’t miss research going on globally. A case in point is a separate study that looked at % non-EN WO/PCT publications. It shows that more and more patents are not published in English and never will be. In 2000, approximately 25% of patents were not published in English; today that numbers is almost 45%. For year 2000 patent applications, even after 14 years, more than 25% of those applications do not have an English equivalent. CAS is a division of the American Chemical Society. Reference Searching Start reference searching by Research topic Author name Company name Journal/Patent SciFinder searches “concepts” and will automatically include singular/plural forms, British/American spellings, common abbreviations and synonyms and word variations in your key word searching SciFinder allows you to identify the top publishing authors or organizations, publication trends and most cited articles in your field SciFinder allows you to save and share answer sets and set up alerts to notify you of the latest publication in your field CAS is a division of the American Chemical Society. Substance Searching CAS REGISTRYSM is the gold standard for chemical substance information. >129 million organic and inorganic substances ; >67 million sequences Substances from journal articles, patents, chemical catalogs, and reputable web sources from the early 1800s to present; GenBank sequences Organic substances as well as - Alloys - Coordination compounds - Minerals - Mixtures - Polymers Experimental and predicted properties; Spectral information - Salts - Sequences  - Organo metallics - Proteins - Inorganic substances CAS is a division of the American Chemical Society. You can conduct five types of substance searches Substance Identifier retrieves substances with the chemical name or CAS Registry Number® that you specify. Chemical Structure uses a structure query to retrieve substances of interest. You can specify an exact structure, a substructure, or a similarity structure. Molecular Formula retrieves substances whose formulas contain the specified atoms and atom counts. Markush retrieves patent references by matching your structure query against generic structures referenced in patents. Property allows you to begin a search with a set of substances that meet specific property criteria. CAS is a division of the American Chemical Society. Copyright 2016 American Chemical Society. Substance Identifier search A substance identifier can be a CAS Registry Number or chemical name (common name, trade name, or acronym) or Genbank number. CAS is a division of the American Chemical Society. Copyright 2016 American Chemical Society. All rights reserved.

Chemical Structure search Exact search: Retrieves exact matches as well as salt forms, stereoisomers, isotopes, multicomponent substances. Substructure search: Results contain the query structure embedded in a bigger structure and any atoms with implicit hydrogen atoms will be open to substitution. Similarity search: Similarity is based on the Tanimoto similarity score and results may not contain the exact query structure Substructure search CAS is a division of the American Chemical Society. Copyright 2016 American Chemical Society. All rights reserved.

Molecular Formula search Retrieves substances with molecular formulas that match the exact atom symbols and atom counts in the query Specialized format for searching polymers: (C3 H6 O)x or (C11 H10 O4)n Dot-disconnect formula for searching multicomponent substances: C17 H18 F N3 O3 . C3 H6 O or Fe . Mn . Ni Recommend to input molecular formula according to Hill’s convention CAS is a division of the American Chemical Society. Copyright 2016 American Chemical Society. Markush search Retrieves patent references that contain generic structures that match the Markush structure query. Inorganic salts, alloys, organometallics, and polymers are not covered in the Markush database CAS is a division of the American Chemical Society. Copyright 2016 American Chemical Society. All rights reserved.

Properties search Search for substances based on experimental or predicted physical property values. Available Predicted Properties: Bioconcentration factor Log P Boiling point Mass intrinsic solubility Density Mass solubility Enthalpy of vaporization Molar intrinsic solubility Flash point Molar solubility Freely rotatable bonds Molar volume Hydrogen donor/acceptor sum Molecular weight Hydrogen acceptors pKa Hydrogen donors Polar surface area Koc Vapor pressure Log D Available Experimental properties: Boiling point Magnetic moment Density Median lethal dose Electrical conductance Melting point Electrical conductivity Optical rotatory power Electrical resistance Refractive index Electrical resistivity Tensile strength Glass transition temperature CAS is a division of the American Chemical Society. Reaction Searching Draw reaction diagrams to search for chemical reactions reported in literature “Get Reactions” function available for quick retrieval of synthesis information Refine answer sets by reaction classifications, reagents, catalysts, solvents, yield and number of steps, Group answer sets by transformations >6.8 million reaction procedures available in SciFinder Substructure reaction capabilities Retrosynthetic searching capabilities
