Today’s objectives: Review chapters 22 and 23 Take the quiz using the computers Review verb tenses and past participles Learn about subject-verb agreement Learn about tense consistency Learn about grammatical categories

Meeting 6 – Warm up/Review EAP 1540 C Winter 2010 Review for Quiz 5: When do we use the simple present tense? The present progressive tense? The simple past? The present perfect? The past perfect? Give the past tense and the past participle of the following verbs in their base form: go, look, eat, jump, seem, put, give, believe, think Do Final Review on pg. 354. Do Practice 4 on pg. 360.

Active: The diplomat gave secret documents to an undercover agent. (The subject performs the action, so it’s active). Passive: Secret documents were given to an undercover agent. (The subject was affected by the action, so it’s passive).

Meeting 6 – Chapter 25 Basic subject-verb agreement rules EAP 1540 C Winter 2010 Basic subject-verb agreement rules Subject-verb agreement simply means that a subject and verb agree in number. A singular subject needs a singular verb, a plural subject needs a plural verb. SUBJECT VERB Singular subject: Mr. Connor teaches in a community college. SUBJECT VERB Plural subject: Many people appreciate his approach.

Meeting 6 – Chapter 25 Rules for more than one subject EAP 1540 C Winter 2010 Rules for more than one subject There are special agreement rules when there is more than one subject in a sentence. and – When subjects are joined by and, use the plural form of the verb. EX: Colleges, universities, and trade schools prepare students for the job market. or, nor – When two subjects are joined by or or nor, the verb agrees with the subject that is closer to it. EX: Neither Amanda Jackson nor her students use the computer lab. EX: Either the students or Amanda uses the laptop.

Review the list of indefinite pronouns on pg. 383 EX: another, anybody, everything, both, several Singular indefinite pronouns follow the third-person singular form because the subjects are singular. EX: Everyone knows that college is challenging. Plural indefinite pronouns follow the plural subject form because the subjects are plural. EX: Many apply to high-tech programs.

Review the list of collective nouns on pg. 385. Generally, each group acts as a unit, so you must use the singular form of the verb. EX: The company is down-sizing. If the members of the group act individually, it is a good idea to use a phrase such as members of. EX: The members of the jury are not able to come to an agreement.

Meeting 6 – Chapter 25 Rules for interrupting words and phrases EAP 1540 C Winter 2010 Rules for interrupting words and phrases Words that come between the subject and the verb may be confusing. In these cases, identify the subject first. Then make sure the verb agrees with it. EX: Some rules regarding admission to this college are controversial. EX: A student in two of my classes writes for the college newspaper.

Meeting 6 – Chapter 26 Consistent verb tense EAP 1540 C Winter 2010 Consistent verb tense When you write, the verb tense you use gives the reader an idea about the time when the event occurred. A tense shift occurs when you shift from one tense to another for no logical reason. Tense shift: College reporter Erica Santiago interviewed a protester and asks about his political philosophy. Correct: College reporter Erica Santiago interviewed and asked about his political philosophy.

Meeting 6 – Chapter 26 Consistent verb tense EAP 1540 C Winter 2010 Consistent verb tense Sometimes the time frame in a text really does change. In those circumstances, you would change the verb tense. Be sure to use certain key words (during my childhood, today, last month, etc.) to indicate the appropriate verb tense. EX: During my childhood, I ate a lot of fast food. Today, I try to eat a healthy diet.

Use could instead of can in the past tense. Use would instead of will in the past tense. EX: In 1996, college wrestler Robert Burzak knew that he could bulk up if he used steroids, but he promised his coach that he would not.
