Campus Discipline Plan To ensure a SAFE, SECURE, and ORDERLY school environment the Administrative Team of W.W. Samuell High School will expect the following from our teachers and staff to assist with our Campus Discipline Plan and Tardy Policy. Discipline Office is located at #102 and staffed by: Ms. Jessica Sandoval, Discipline Office Manager

Hallway Transitions Teachers will: Student will: be present in the hallway near their classrooms during each passing period. actively monitor the students as they transition to class by narrating the positive behavior and redirecting negative behavior will greet and welcome students verbally as they enter class. close doors when tardy bell rings Student will: move efficiently and calmly through the hallways to their classrooms greet teachers with positive verbal greeting as they enter classroom report to tardy center if they are at the classroom when the tardy bell rings return quickly to classroom with tardy pass

Schoolwide Classroom Rules On Time, Every Time. Follow Instructions the First Time Given. No cell phones, ear phones or other electronic devices visible unless approved for instruction. Cell phones and earbuds will be confiscated by teacher or administrator if student is out of compliance with campus and/or classroom expectations. ID BADGES MUST BE WORN AT ALL TIMES.

2017-2018 Tardy Policy 1st / 5th Period begins at 9:05. Students who are late to 1st/5th period will report to the auditorium. A tardy pass will be given. Upon the 3rd tardy, parent contact will be made. For all other class periods Students will be escorted to nearest tardy center (and back to class) by monitor or administrator Teachers will NOT allow students to be late to class without a written pass Students who are not at the classroom when the tardy bell rings must get a tardy pass, unless they have a written pass from a teacher/administrator/counselor.

Excessive Tardies 3 tardies in a single 6 weeks period = parent conference will be scheduled Continued tardy infractions= Counselor referral ISS Additional disciplinary consequences Tardiness is disruptive to the learning environment and results in fewer instructional minutes for students. EVERY effort will be made by ALL parties to ensure students are in class on time. Excessive absences and tardies are NOT tolerated at W.W. Samuell High School.

CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT Teachers must be in control of their classroom for effective instruction to take place. Provide a safe environment in which to learn and grow. Effective and purposeful seating arrangement with seating chart. Classroom is neat and organized. Teacher greets students positively as they enter with eye contact. Teachers must be prepared to teach and engage students from bell to bell. Monitor students by walking around. Limit movement in and out of class (Written passes are required). Be respectful and courteous with students, expecting the same in return. Follow campus discipline procedures. Conference with students outside the presence of the class when a problem arises. Communicate often with parents by phone and school conferences. Passes should only be issued in emergency situations. Please contact a Safety Monitor to escort students in the hallways. Provide a classroom environment conducive to learning.

Student Discipline Referral Procedures 1. Warning/Classroom-based Consequences/Verbal Redirection 2. Student/Teacher Conference 3. Communicate with parent by phone 4. Teacher/Parent Conference 5. Referral to Counselor /Discipline Office/ Administrator. Teachers will document and keep a log of students with chronic behavior issues to assist with students needing SST Committee Referral for additional support.

What Contributes to Discipline Problems? OUT OF SCHOOL CAUSES: Differences in cultural norms Violence in society Effects of the media Lack of a secure family or home environment IN SCHOOL CAUSES Student Boredom/disengagement in class Sense of powerlessness/learned helplessness Unclear or inconsistent limits/expectations Lack of acceptable outlets for feelings/emotions

Action Plan for Campus Discipline and Classroom Management To promote positive interventions through frequent parental contact, parent conferences, providing student incentives and referral to the Student Support Team (SST) for appropriate placement as needed. Teachers will develop a classroom environment that is supportive, safe, peaceful, calm, predictable and concentrated on students Students must be provided a nurturing and caring environment within the rules that govern appropriate behavior in our society. Students need structure and clearly defined limits on behavior. To develop respect and trust in the classroom, teachers should model that kind of behavior. Teachers should listen carefully to students, speak to them with respect and treat everyone fairly. Knowing students as individuals and acknowledging them supports positive behavior. The Administrative Team and Campus Discipline Office will support teachers and staff to create a positive culture for learning.

RESTORATIVE DISCIPLINE PRACTICES During the 2017-2018 School Year we will implement the Restorative Practices and focus on social emotional learning strategies to help reduce the Out Of School and In School Suspensions for students in an effort to make them more accountable for their behavior and for increased academic success and student achievement for the teacher.
