So Where Is Korea?

Not Too Far, actually…  Change the way of thinking!

Overview Focus on International & intercultural PR in major Asian City Learn how the cultural differences shape public relations practices in different ways between the US and Korea. Also learn how culture differences shape interpersonal communication. 3 weeks of summer1 session in DE (May 15th 2017) 2 weeks of traveling in Korea (June 4th to 17th). 2 professors, Jin-Ae Kang & Cui Z. Meadows will lead the program!

So… Why Visit South Korea? The public relations industry has been developed dramatically over the past thirty years in South Korea. In Korea, public relations contributed to the development of a partnership between the government and business sectors. As a result, the war-ravaged country in the 1950s has now been replaced by an industrial powerhouse ranked the 15th among global economies. South Korea is regarded as the only country that once received foreign aid and becomes a country that gives economic aid to other countries. Seoul becomes one of the world’s top ten financial centers and is home to some of the largest technology corporations such as Samsung and LG. The popularity of South Korean pop culture (Hallyu, the Korean Wave) has been a unique cultural trend in the global society since the 1990s. Based upon the economic and cultural thrive, South Korea society now seeks a quality of lives, sustainable development, and social responsibility.

PR * Civic Engagement Sustainability * Sport events * Environmental issues * Sustainable Business Students will visit various public relations agency such as Edelman, Ketchum, Enzaim Health, and Weber-Shandwick. We will focus on health care campaign cases and how the campaigns utilize social media. Students will also visit 2018 Winter Olympics organizing committee in Pyeongchang, and meet the spokesperson. Our focus is to learn the trend of the sustainable international sports event and public relations practice in sports. In Jeju Island, we will visit the Kakao Corporation headquarter. Kakao is a leading technology company in the Korean mobile-platform market that encompass a wide range of services such as messenger, health, and entertainment. Our visit will focus on the health and technology. For the theme of giving, students will visit Cheil Worldwide, the largest advertising agency in Korea and Dream Touch for All, a non-profit organization, which is dedicated to the movement for education equity and excellence. In Cheil Worldwide, we will focus on their pro-bono projects and PSA campaigns. In Dream Touch for All, students will learn the public relations practice of non-profit organizations.
