First Year Student Orientation Parent Health and Safety Session Beth Cocola, APRN Family Nurse Practitioner Director of Health Services

Health Requirements MMR (Measles/Mumps/Rubella): 2 doses or equivalent; Varicella (Chickenpox): 2 doses or equivalent; Meningitis: 1 or 2 doses for campus residents.

Health Requirements Most CT high school grads will have some or all of our required vaccines; Different requirements in NY & NJ.

Health Requirements Vaccine equivalents: MMR or Varicella: Blood test (titer) showing person is immune; Varicella: Date of natural disease confirmed in writing by health care provider (or blood test);   <If uncertain about Varicella/Chickenpox request blood test>.

Health Requirements Meningitis Vaccine(Menactra® or Menveo ®) Required for campus residents only; Two doses needed when first dose given more than 5 years before 8/15/17.

Group B Meningitis Vaccine-Optional This is a new vaccine; We recommend that you speak with your doctor or health care provider about benefits of this vaccine; Brand names are: Trumenba ® and Bexsero ®; Two or three doses are used-depending on which type is given.

Health Requirements Non-vaccine health requirements: Physical examination within past 12 months; Tuberculosis testing for nursing and nutrition students (and others with a specific risk).

Health Requirements • Only student athletes need to submit the “Pre-participation” exam form; • Can be submitted to Health Services with other forms, we will provide to the athletic trainer.

Health Requirements Opting out of student health insurance: Comparable coverage must currently be in place; Deadline to perform waiver annually by Sept 15.

Services Schedule: September through May Days: Monday through Friday Hours: 8:30 am to 4:30 pm open until 5:00 pm on Wednesdays Location: Little Red House

Services Treatment for common illnesses and injuries; OTC’s and Rx-as indicated; Some in office testing (no blood draws).

Services No specialty care or procedures; Open to all full-time, registered students; Commuters welcome; Don’t have to be enrolled in school insurance; Most services do not require appointment; No cost for most services.

Services FERPA : Educational privacy law similar to HIPPA; Privacy regulations for students over 18; Family communications.

Services Urgent or emergency medical situations: Business hours: Health Services or Public Safety; After-hours: Public Safety or Residential Life (RC’s) for resident students;

Services Additional Services for Students: Counseling and Wellness Center <Available at information tables during lunch today>

Health and Safety Risks Safety training for students: Safety oriented training during Week of Welcome; My Student Body-online education summer assignment; Parent/family communications DO continue to influence decision making about drug and alcohol use in the college years.

FAQ’s What happens when a student needs a prescription? USJ APRN/MD can provide when indicated-caveat we do not prescribe for all situations; Mail order with your insurance is good option for ongoing meds; Students can take shuttle to a local pharmacy, or Health Services can assist with delivery.

FAQ’s How should the student store medications in the residence hall (example ADD medications)? The students store their own medication we do not store them; Lock box reassuring but generally not needed; Keep meds out of sight in room.

FAQ’s What hospital is used if a student is sent to the Emergency Room in an ambulance? Saint Francis Hospital is the closest to USJ, so it is generally the first choice; If students have another local choice, please let us know-for example if student has a specialist at CCMC.

For food allergy or intolerance-what should the student do ? Set up a meeting during non-service hours with Bon Appetit (dining service) manager; Contact Health Services Dietitian for transitional guidance; If an Epi-Pen® is prescribed, have it on hand at all times; During business hours Health Services can assist unless 911 is immediately indicated; In case of medical emergency Public Safety should also be called.
