What is LMI? Facts, analysis or interpretation of data gathered about workers e.g.:- Wages Hours worked Working patterns Gender balance Qualifications needed Geographical locations
What do I need to know about that for? Knowing certain info makes decision making easier It answers questions such as:- Will I need to go to uni? How much will I earn What would I do each day?
I want to be a computer games tester… I’d sit and play games all day I’d work at home I’d not have to do any writing I’d earn loads of money You may wish to remove the pre filled preconceptions and ask your assembly audience what they think a games tester might do.
How much would I earn? How much would I earn per year? The UK average salary is about £28,000 £27,000 £37,000 £47,000
How many hours a week would I work? The average working week in the UK is 35 hours 20 35 39
What % of games testers are female? The UK population is 49% male and 51% female 24% 54% 74% You may wish to ask pupils how they would feel working in an industry with so few females – are the responses different between the genders?
How many games tester jobs will there be in 10 years n the UK there are currently 185,000 games tester jobs 154,000 184,000 210,000
Where in the UK are the most games tester jobs? There are jobs all over the country – it’s just that it can be easier to get a job in certain parts of the country. London & SE NE & Humber Scotland You may wish to ask pupils how they might feel if they had to move to get a job
Which industry sector does NOT employ games testers? Some jobs can be found in all sorts of employment sectors… e.g. Accountants work in building companies... Health Construction Legal and Accounting This is a trick question – they all employ games testers This may surprise pupils but games testers work in all sorts of industries, not just the big games development companies.
Would I be more likely to be…? Full time work is usually 35+ hours per week Part time is usually up to 25 hours per week Self employed means you work for yourself not the company Employed full time Employed part time Self employed
So… If you want to... Avoid moving away from home you could research how many jobs are in your area Know you have realistic pay ideas… Avoid working in jobs where most posts are part time or self employed contracts You need LMI
