Rural Rebranding REBRANDING PLACES -describe rural places in the UK -identify reasons for their decline -explain why Cornwall is in crisis

What do you think? As a group I would like you to write as many words as possible to describe rural areas in the UK

Countryside in crisis? Since the foot-and-mouth outbreak of 2001 an anti- idyllic view of the countryside has emerged It includes ideas such as: Backward Unsophisticated Unfriendly Environmentally damaged Boring Slow

What impacts has this had? I would like you to listen to the following song http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=78Y7cBLJWgI Now using the lyrics I would like you to identify any problems or reasons why the countryside needs to rebrand

Where is it all going wrong? I would like you to sort the cards into the following categories MINING AGRICULTURE QUARRYING FISHING

Complete the mind map

What has caused this decline? The decline in agriculture in the UK has reduced employment and caused economic problems in rural areas The lack of job opportunities results in out migration of young people, resulting in an ageing population Services such as shops, schools and post offices close as people move away for work. This creates more economic problems and social isolation becomes worse Attracting new business and tourists through rebranding will increase employment and services. This will then encourage young people to stay in the area and new people to move there.

Cornwall in Crisis “Cornwall remains one of Europe’s most deprived areas. Many coastal communities are still struggling to find ways to face social, economic and environmental challenges.” Cornwall County Council 4 million visitors per year yet many of the locals fear that Cornwall is in crisis and in need of regeneration

Cornwall in Crisis One of the main reasons for deprivation in Cornwall, like many rural areas, is their remoteness Geographers refer to this as the core and periphery

Core and periphery What does core and periphery mean? Where are they? What does this mean for places like Cornwall? Using page 271 describe Cornwall’s location

How can the rural survive? Create a spider diagram or a list to record your ideas of different ways rural areas can rebrand. Think about:- Culture Industry Farming Tourism
