DEPARTMENTS BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING EPIDEMIOLOGY MOLECULAR BIOCHEM. AND PHARM. MOLECULAR MEDICINE NEUROSCIENCE The researchers' works is organized into 10 departments and the institute's main activities concern the medicine and pharmacology. Indeed the main research areas are the battle against cancer, cardiovascular and kidney diseases, rare diseases, epidemiology and public health.  Among theese departements the departement of Environmental health science works to investigate the presence of the contaminants in the environment and on the assessment of human exposure with related health risks. ONCOLOGY PUBLIC HEALTH RENAL MEDICINE CARDIOVASCULAR RESEARCH ENVIRON. HEALTH SCIENCES First plenary meeting of the project HOME/2014/JDRU/AG/DRUG/7086

ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH SCIENCE DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH SCIENCE Proteomics and Metabolomics. Molecular epidemiology used to identified genetic and/or environmental factor posing risk to human health. Risk assessment related to atmospheric pollution, contamination of soil, surface and ground waters. Evaluation of risk associated with contamination performed in vitro and in silico, Development and application of analithycal method for compounds of biological and environmental interest. First plenary meeting of the project HOME/2014/JDRU/AG/DRUG/7086

LAB OF NUTRITION TOXICOLOGY MAIN ACTIVITIES: Study the sources, presence, behavior, fate and effects of emerging environmental contaminants. Development and application of analytical methods for compounds of environmental interests. Estimate of the drug consumption in the population. Chemical contaminants in food and human nutrition. Into this departement The Laboratory of Ettore Zuccato studies the source and fate of emerging environmental contaminants such as pharmaceuticals, illicit drugs, personal care products developing analytical method for these pollutants. Other thopics are the study of human exposure to food contaminants including dioxines and PCBs. First plenary meeting of the project HOME/2014/JDRU/AG/DRUG/7086

ENVIRONMENTAL BIOMARKERS UNIT MAIN ACTIVITIES: Wastewater based epidemiology. Development of sewage biomarkers to be measured in urban wastewater. Evaluate human habits such as illicit drugs, alcohol and nicotine use. Assess human exposure to pesticides. Together with the environmental biomarker unit, leaded by Sara Castiglioni, our working group focused the attention on the Wastewater based epidemiology. The project started with cocaine and its metabolites, their levels in wastewater revealed that cocaine consumption greatly exceeds officials estimates. The approach has been extended to include other common drug of abuse and its able to detect consumption changes in real time complementing survey method and describe more realistically the drug consumption phenomenon. Now this approach include also nicotine, alcohol and other emerging contaminants like pesticides and mycotoxins. First plenary meeting of the project HOME/2014/JDRU/AG/DRUG/7086

MAIN RESEARCH PROJECTS SEWPROF (Marie Curie ITN # 317205): A new paradigm in drug use and human health risk assessment: Sewage profiling at the community level. Cost Action ES1307: Sewage biomarkers analysis for community health assessment. Aqua Drugs (National Agency for Drug Policy): “Estimates of drug use in the population by analysis of wastewater.” Cariplo Rif. 2013-1550 (Fondazione Cariplo): “Assessment of the environmental distribution of a number of new emerging and unconventional pollutants, to guide actions to protect the environment and in particular the surface and underground water.” Theese and other research activities were conducted within several projects, including a cost action on sewage biomarker analysis, a collaboration with the national Agency for Drug policy for the estimates of drug use in the population and a project whit the SEWPROF network.
