Starter for 5! Name one of the 6 articles of faith in Sunni Islam. Give an example of how a Muslim could put the concept of Tawhid into practice in their everyday life. Fill in the gaps ‘He is God the _____, God the _________. He begot no one nor was He begotten. No one is ___________ to him.’ Name the three part of the Trinity in Christianity. Give one argument for the use of corporal punishment (link to aims of punishment).

Starter for 5! Name one of the 6 articles of faith in Sunni Islam. Angels, Tawhid, Prophets, Day of Judgement, Supremacy of God’s will, Authority of the holy books Give an example of how a Muslim could put the concept of Tawhid into practice in their everyday life. E.g. Making sure their jobs, money or family do not come before God, don’t use images of God or Muhammad. ‘He is God the One, God the eternal. He begot no one nor was He begotten. No one is comparable to him.’ Name the three parts of the Trinity in Christianity. Father, Son and Holy Spirit Give one argument for the use of corporal punishment. It is painful so it is a good deterrent, it is good retribution.

The 99 Names of Allah Learning Objective: To enquire into the nature of God in Islam through the 99 names of Allah I can explain why Muslims have 99 Beautiful Names for God. I can give examples of the 99 names and begin evaluate their importance. I can interpret Muslim Quotes on the 99 Beautiful Names.

Greatness Who do you think is great? What does it mean to achieve greatness?

Greatness What would I think is great? What is the greatest thing for me? As a Muslim, I believe that God is Great and is the Greatest of all things. We say this every day and when something good happens. In Arabic we say ‘Allahu Akbar’. (Write this down to remember the true meaning of this!) Apply to the Muslim Faith, what would be great and the greatest in Islam? That would be Allah- and each day Muslim will say Allahu Akbar. The 99 Names follow this as because Muslims believe God is great he cannot be explained

The 99 Beautiful Names • Muslims believe that Allah is eternal (without limits in time). • Any attempt to capture Allah in an image is an attempt to limit God. • It is an insult to create an image of God and an image to those who worship him as it is suggesting they worship something with limits. • Instead, they have the 99 names for Allah to show his qualities and his greatness. • This is why Muslims use geometric shapes to decorate their mosques instead of images. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nZNTjoZdVn8 Enquire into the 99 names of Allah, why do Muslims have 99 names of Allah? What does this tell Muslims about the nature of God? Students will have a sheet with the 99 Beautiful Names – explain as a class we are going to create a top ten chart show for these name. 5 have been chosen for them as these are the words they must know for the exam, students now need to choose another 5 to create a top ten.

99 Beautiful Names Chart Show What were the 5 names you chose to go into your top ten? As a class we are going to put our top ten names in order from 1-10. Can you arrange yourselves in an order you agree on before the chart music stops? Get students to feedback the 5 other names they chose from their sheet. Agree on these three as a class and add these to the 5 names already chosen (there are packs with these written on). Choose 10 students to volunteer and hold a name for God. They need to arrange themselves in order from 1-10 on which name they think is the most important to the least important. Then open this up to the class – do they agree with the order they have chosen? Do they want to move anyone and why? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EpmBy62xLrk

Muslim Quotes The Most Excellent Names belong to God: use them to call on Him. Qur’an 7:180 What does this quote suggest about the 99 names of Allah and how should a Muslim use them in their lives?

Muslim Quotes This God, your Lord, there is no God but Him, the Creator all things, so worship him, He is in charge of everything. No vision can take him in, but He takes in all vision. He is the All Subtle, the All Aware. Qur’an 6:102-103 There is a link here to predestination which will be picked up on later on in the unit. Students to write an answer in their books. What does this quote suggest about the 99 names of Allah and how should a Muslim use them in their lives?
