What’s An Emergency w Earthquake Wind Flooding Loss of Utilities Bomb Threat/Armed Offender Fire IMAGE – TEXT Aim Highlight a simple tool to make the right decisions at the right time. Script: A few things happen in an emergency: Things appear to happen in slow motion Sometimes you get tunnel vision Sensory overload – too much information – brain can’t compute You may be in shock You may have seconds to act Key messages: Doing the right thing right now – to survive the first few seconds Doing the right things in the next few minutes Do not worry about the next few hours and days Keep focussing on the next few minutes until you get home Instructor information Things appear to happen in slow motion – Called temporal distortion – Because the brain is processing information very quickly in survival mode Survive the first few seconds – secure heavy items to prevent injury and knowing what to do Survive the next few minutes – training to control the chaos when the shaking stops – having a plan knowing what to do – First Aid Surviving the next few hours – civil defence kit, emergency communication apps and making appropriate evacuation decisions w

w Evacuate or Stay? IMAGES – EVACUATE OR STAY? SUMMARY Aim Summarise earthquake hazards and how they impact on evacuation decision making Script If there is an earthquake: stay If there is an earthquake and people are injured: look after yourself before helping others If there is a post-earthquake fire: evacuate If you are in a tsunami zone: try to go to a higher floor (tsunami safe zone) If your building is severely damaged: evacuate Q: What if you can’t evacuate the building? A: You may be trapped in the building for several days – importance of food and plenty of water A: Try and gain access to the roof to signal for help/rescue Consider the weather before evacuating – it may be safer to stay in the building until the weather clears before walking home Remember: the building is unlikely to collapse! w
