The Denominator The denominator is the part of the fraction below the line. It is pretty simple to remember because D is the first letter in down and D is also the first letter in denominator. So if you think D for denominator think down.

The Numerator The numerator is the part of the fraction above the line. There is no really easy way to remember the numerator in a fraction. The way you can remember it is remember the denominator. (Do for down and denominator.)

Mixed Numbers A mixed number is a fraction with a whole number next to it. For example, 1 ½. That is said like one and 1 half.

Improper Fractions An improper fraction is a fraction in which the numerator is larger than the denominator. For example 5/3. Do you see how 5 the numerator is larger than 3 the denominator.

The Whole The denominator is how many pieces of the object there is in. See how this circle is divided into 2 pieces the circle is the whole because it is the object.

How fraction are related to decimals They are related to decimals because hey are both part of a whole and not a whole unless it is an improper fraction or mixed number. For example, ½ is the same thing as 0.50.

Now you know about fractions.
