Comparisons of Equality To compare qualities of people or things that are the same or equal, use the following formula: Tan + adjective or adverb + como* (Como doesn’t need an accent because it’s not a question word here.) When using an adjective, it has to match the noun that comes BEFORE it!

Ejemplo – with an adjective Francesca is as angry as Mario. (They are equally angry.) Francesca está tan enojada * como Mario. *Notice enojada is femenine, matching Francesca , not Mario.

Vamos a practicar 1. My dog is as strong as your cat. 1. Mi perro es tan fuerte como tu gato.

2. Italian food is as delicious as Chinese food. 2. La comida italiana es tan deliciosa (sabrosa, rica) como la comida china.

3. Arnold isn’t as short as Danny Devito. 3. Arnold no es tan bajo como Danny Devito.

4. Bart Simpson isn’t as honest as Abe Lincoln. 4. Bart Simpson no es tan honesto como Abe Lincoln.

5. Riding a bike is as dangerous as mountain climbing. 5. Montar en bicicleta es tan peligroso como escalar montañas.

Ejemplo with an adverb A zebra runs as fast as a horse. Una cebra corre tan rápidamente como un caballo.

6. Mario dresses as elegantly as Patricia. 6. Mario se viste tan elegantemente como Patricia.

7. Esteban shaves as carefully as Carlos. 7. Esteban se afeita tan cuidadosamente como Carlos.

8. This dog is as comfortable (cómodo) as that dog. 8. Este perro está tan cómodo como ese perro.

9. They are not as clean as the elephants. 9. Ellos no están tan limpios como los elefantes.

10. Easter Island (La isla de pascua) is as mysterious as Stonehenge. 10. La isla de pascuas es tan misteriosa como Stonehenge.

11. Beau sleeps as contently as Denny. 11. Beau duerme tan contentamente como Denny.

Comparisons of Equality, Part II Comparisons of Equality with Nouns To compare quanitities that are the same or equal, use the formula: Tanto/tantos + noun + como (This is as much as or as many as.)

I have as many apples as oranges. Tengo tantas manzanas como naranjas. Notice tantas matches the word that follows it (manzanas).

Eduardo is in as much danger as Marco Eduardo is in as much danger as Marco. (to be in danger = estar en peligro) Eduardo está en tanto peligro como Marco.

Más práctica 12. There are as many puppies as kittens. 12. Hay tantos perritos como gatitos.
