Criteria for Determining a Psychological Disorder Typicality: How often the person will typically (on average) experience a certain behavior or mental process Maladaptivity: Extent to which the behavior or mental process impairs someone’s ability to function on a daily basis Emotional Discomfort: Emotional pain the person feels regularly Socially Unacceptable Behaviors: Extent to which a behavior or mental process is accepted by society Culture-bound syndromes: symptoms of an illness based on the culture of an individual

Culture-Bound Syndrome Zar- Middle Eastern belief in demonic spirits possessing the human body, which involves shouting, laughing, head-banging, or other inappropriate behaviors
